Workers' contribution goes in step with the country's
\nindustrial growth. We observe that their potential is not only
\nused in the quest for welfare improvement, it is often exploited
\nby third parties for their own interests.<\/p>\n
Poor workers, they indeed have a potential on the political
\nstage. Before the recent July 27 incident, the mass media
\nincessantly reported workers' grievances. Workers' protests were
\nheld for various reasons including personnel's rights abuse,
\nbonus, food allowance and others.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, third parties exploited workers for often remote
\ncauses like changing political laws, general election rulings and
\nthe dual-function concept of the Armed Forces.<\/p>\n
After the July 27 incident, no more workers' protests at the
\nManpower Ministry or at the House of Representatives. The
\ninstigators behind the protests have realized their mistakes and
\ncome to their senses. The same applies to the workers. They
\nrealize that they have been used as a "tool in the game of
\npolitics."<\/p>\n
Company managements should take the following steps in the
\nfuture to safeguard their companies:<\/p>\n
a. Manpower Ministry's rules should be observed;<\/p>\n
b. Establish and develop internal and external communications;<\/p>\n
c. Provide an opportunity to workers to join the government-
\nrecognized All Indonesian Workers Organization (SPSI);<\/p>\n
d. Examine the working conditions of personnel and bring about a
\npleasant and secure work environment.<\/p>\n
As for office and industrial workers, they should keep a
\ndistance from third parties and gossipmongers, who only have
\ntheir own interests at heart. Grievances can be settled by
\nconsensus or through the Manpower Ministry.<\/p>\n
