Workers file complaint rights body<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Thirty eight workers from two textile factories
\nmet with members of the National Commission on Human Rights
\nyesterday to complain about unfair treatment by their employers.<\/p>\n
The workers were employees of PT Rajabrana and PT Ever
\nShinetex Garment.<\/p>\n
"We told the companies that they have violated our rights as
\nlaborers. They did not respond, instead they treated us unfairly
\nafterwards by reducing our working hours, suspending us from the
\njob, and forcing us to leave the company without reasonable
\nseverance pay", said one of the workers.<\/p>\n
Problems between the workers and the companies came to a head
\nafter the factory employees demanded that their holiday bonuses
\nbe paid and taxes on their salaries exempted.<\/p>\n
Prior to the meeting with the commission members, the workers
\nhad referred their grievances to the government-recognized All
\nIndonesian Workers Union representatives at their factories. But
\nthey felt the union gave them unsatisfactory answers.<\/p>\n
One of the workers said that they had also filed their
\ncomplaints with the Manpower Ministry's provincial office in
\nBogor, but all to no avail.<\/p>\n
Sugiri, a member of the commission, accepted their complaint
\nand said that the commission would look into the case after
\ndetailed information had been received from all sides.<\/p>\n
"We accept the complaint and will go through with it. In line
\nwith the regulation, the commission will first try to get
\nbalanced information from all sides." Sugiri added.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the issue, a staffer of Shinetex told The
\nJakarta Post yesterday that in fact the company agreed to fulfill
\nthe demands of the employees but needed some time to do so.<\/p>\n
The management of PT Rajabrana was not available for comment.
