        "content": "<p>Workers asked not to strike during APEC<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): An official of the city administration urged<br>\nemployers and workers in Greater Jakarta yesterday to avoid labor<br>\nconflicts leading to strikes or demonstrations before and during<br>\nthe Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit next month.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We are all responsible for helping the meeting to succeed,&quot;<br>\nFreddy Tuamelly, head of the city manpower office, said in a<br>\nceremony for the signing of a collective labor agreement between<br>\nthe management of PT Setiawan Sejati, a print equipment supplying<br>\ncompany, and its workers.<\/p>\n<p>The summit, to be attended by 17 heads of states, is scheduled<br>\nto be held in Jakarta and Bogor, West Java, from Nov. 8 to 10.<\/p>\n<p>Among the executives present at the ceremony were<br>\nrepresentatives of the Jakarta chapter of the All Indonesian<br>\nWorkers Union (SPSI) and of the Association of Indonesian<br>\nBusinessmen (Apindo).<\/p>\n<p>Freddy warned about the possibility of strikes, protests or<br>\nother kinds of labor conflicts to attract the attention of<br>\nforeign delegates attending the summit. &quot;Third parties&quot; will<br>\nstrive not only to discredit the government but to damage the<br>\nnation&apos;s image as well, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Freddy urged managements to take humane approaches when<br>\nsolving conflicts with their workers. &quot;No problem is without<br>\nsolution,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Greater Jakarta, which also includes Bogor, Tangerang and<br>\nBekasi, accommodates thousands of factories which employ millions<br>\nof workers.<\/p>\n<p>Christo Panggabean, the president of PT Setiawan Sejati, said<br>\nthat the collective labor agreement was signed in a bid to give<br>\ncertainty to doing business in the area and to help improve the<br>\nworkers&apos;s welfare.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed satisfaction that after the long process, the<br>\nmanagement and the unit of SPSI representing workers in the<br>\nnegotiation table finally reached the agreement on workers&apos;<br>\nrights and their obligations.<\/p>\n<p>Doriani Sihombing, chairman of the SPSI unit at the company,<br>\nwho shares the same feeling, said that negotiations between<br>\nworkers representatives with the management went as well as<br>\nexpected.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We feel that we are treated as partners and we have never<br>\nbeen put under pressure on any points,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to company remuneration, the collective labor<br>\nagreement also contains stipulations regarding workers rights,<br>\nannual leaves, monthly leave for female workers,  annual bonuses<br>\nand other social securities.
