Workers asked not to strike during APEC<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An official of the city administration urged
\nemployers and workers in Greater Jakarta yesterday to avoid labor
\nconflicts leading to strikes or demonstrations before and during
\nthe Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit next month.<\/p>\n
"We are all responsible for helping the meeting to succeed,"
\nFreddy Tuamelly, head of the city manpower office, said in a
\nceremony for the signing of a collective labor agreement between
\nthe management of PT Setiawan Sejati, a print equipment supplying
\ncompany, and its workers.<\/p>\n
The summit, to be attended by 17 heads of states, is scheduled
\nto be held in Jakarta and Bogor, West Java, from Nov. 8 to 10.<\/p>\n
Among the executives present at the ceremony were
\nrepresentatives of the Jakarta chapter of the All Indonesian
\nWorkers Union (SPSI) and of the Association of Indonesian
\nBusinessmen (Apindo).<\/p>\n
Freddy warned about the possibility of strikes, protests or
\nother kinds of labor conflicts to attract the attention of
\nforeign delegates attending the summit. "Third parties" will
\nstrive not only to discredit the government but to damage the
\nnation's image as well, he said.<\/p>\n
Freddy urged managements to take humane approaches when
\nsolving conflicts with their workers. "No problem is without
\nsolution," he said.<\/p>\n
Greater Jakarta, which also includes Bogor, Tangerang and
\nBekasi, accommodates thousands of factories which employ millions
\nof workers.<\/p>\n
Christo Panggabean, the president of PT Setiawan Sejati, said
\nthat the collective labor agreement was signed in a bid to give
\ncertainty to doing business in the area and to help improve the
\nworkers's welfare.<\/p>\n
He expressed satisfaction that after the long process, the
\nmanagement and the unit of SPSI representing workers in the
\nnegotiation table finally reached the agreement on workers'
\nrights and their obligations.<\/p>\n
Doriani Sihombing, chairman of the SPSI unit at the company,
\nwho shares the same feeling, said that negotiations between
\nworkers representatives with the management went as well as
\nexpected.<\/p>\n
"We feel that we are treated as partners and we have never
\nbeen put under pressure on any points," he said.<\/p>\n
In addition to company remuneration, the collective labor
\nagreement also contains stipulations regarding workers rights,
\nannual leaves, monthly leave for female workers, annual bonuses
