Worker strikes rock East Java<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): East Java has been rocked by a series of strikes
\nin the past three days involving thousands of workers from three
\nmajor companies; kretek cigarette-maker PT. Gudang Garam, bicycle
\nmaker PT WIM Cycle and processed food manufacturer PT Sekar Laut.<\/p>\n
The strikes were held separately in the three different cities
\nwhere the factories are located.<\/p>\n
Workers at Gudang Garam's Kediri factory demanded, among other
\nthings, a 50 percent increase in their salaries.<\/p>\n
Antara reported yesterday that the three-day strike which
\nbegan Monday reached its peak Tuesday when 40,000 employees
\nstayed away from work.<\/p>\n
Gudang Garam's production director, Sumarto Wonowidjojo,
\npromised the workers yesterday that his brother, Rachman Halim,
\nthe president of the company, would meet with them as soon as he
\nreturned from Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The strike has paralyzed the company's production in its main
\nfactory.<\/p>\n
In Sidoardjo, 1,500 Sekar Laut employees also left their
\nassembly line Tuesday over concerns about job security. They
\nbelieve bosses are gradually axing jobs.<\/p>\n
\"In the last two weeks 100 employees have been dismissed
\nwithout any clear reason and slowly but surely the number of
\nworkers is continuously being reduced,\"Antara quoted an employee
\nas saying.<\/p>\n
Sekar Laut produces fried crackers and frozen shrimps.<\/p>\n
A similar sentiment of discontent was also displayed Tuesday
\nby 500 workers of bicycle company WIM Cycle at the company's
\nGresik plant. Their demands included improved job security,
\nsocial insurance and menstrual leave.<\/p>\n
A Ministry of Labor regulation states that women are allowed
\ntwo days menstrual leave each month. (09)<\/p>",
