        "content": "<p>Worker crackdown hits construction<\/p>\n<p>MALAYSIA: Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad acknowledged on Tuesday<br>\nthat a mass expulsion of illegal immigrants had hurt Malaysia's<br>\nconstruction industry but indicated that employers must now be<br>\nprepared to pay the relatively higher costs of legal workers.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether employers were holding the government to ransom<br>\nby forcing it to reverse a decision on immigrants, Mahathir told<br>\nreporters there was no reversal but \"if they want to have<br>\n(foreign labor) they must only employ legal ones, so they'll have<br>\nto pay.\"<\/p>\n<p>The government would not penalize employers who had in the<br>\npast used illegal labor because \"we'll penalize ourselves ... the<br>\nconstruction industry is not moving,\" he was quoted as saying by<br>\nthe official Bernama news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Illegal Indonesian immigrants made up 70 percent of the<br>\nbuilding industry's 500,000 foreign workers before a crackdown in<br>\nrecent months, according to the Master Builders Association of<br>\nMalaysia (MBAM). --AFP<\/p>",
