        "content": "<p>Work starts on Kopassus mall<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The construction of a Rp 63-billion (US$26.5<br>\nmillion) shopping center to serve soldiers and residents started<br>\nyesterday in Cijantung, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Maj. Gen. Prabowo Subianto, chief of the Army's special force<br>\n(Kopassus), officiated at the commencement of construction of the<br>\n16,000-meter-square building called Graha Cijantung.<\/p>\n<p>The shopping center will be jointly owned by Kopassus and<br>\nprivate developer PT Graha Haji Masagung. It will stand on a 2.5-<br>\nhectare plot owned by Kopassus.<\/p>\n<p>Kopassus and the private developer each have a 50 percent<br>\nstake in the five-storied project.<\/p>\n<p>Graha Cijantung will offer a slight discount to soldiers.<br>\nMilitary members of several other units are also based near the<br>\nproject.<\/p>\n<p>Prabowo said, \"The Army's special force intends to cater to<br>\nsoldiers and low-income people in the surrounding area.\"<\/p>\n<p>The Cijantung district is home to 516,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Djohan Pahlawan, director of PT Graha Haji Masagung, said the<br>\neastern part of the shopping center will be allocated to street<br>\nvendors and operators of small shops which previously stood along<br>\nthe Kalibaru river in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Djohan said the shop owners would be given priority because<br>\nthey had rented shops in the area before construction began.<\/p>\n<p>\"They will not pay higher rent than they used to,\" he said,<br>\nadding that 60 percent of the shops in the plaza had been sold.<\/p>\n<p>Shop prices range from Rp 6 million to Rp 9 million per square<br>\nmeter.<\/p>\n<p>Priority<\/p>\n<p>Djohan said the plaza will provide playing grounds for<br>\nchildren, entertainment centers and movie theaters.<\/p>\n<p>The plaza will also have a public health center, a medical<br>\nlaboratory and a drugstore.<\/p>\n<p>He said the plaza was Kopassus' first.<\/p>\n<p>Two similar shopping centers are being built for the Marine<br>\nCorps in Jakarta and Surabaya.<\/p>\n<p>The one in Jakarta, worth $7.64 million, was started in the<br>\nMarine Corps complex in Cilandak, South Jakarta, last month.
