Work on overpasses to begin in April<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Construction of seven overpasses in the capital
\nwill start in April at the earliest, an official announced on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for the city administration, Muhayat, said the
\nconstruction projects of three of the overpasses would cost the
\ncity authorities around Rp 50 billion. The other projects would
\nbe funded by the state budget.<\/p>\n
Muhayat said the city financed overpasses were situated in
\nPenggilingan area in East Jakarta, Kalibata in South Jakarta, and
\nGalur area of Jl. Suprapto in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The construction projects in Penggilingan and Kalibata will
\ncost Rp 20 billion each, according to Muhayat.<\/p>\n
He said the projects would not require people to sell their
\nplots, allowing the city administration to save money and avoid
\nland disputes commonly occurring in the past.<\/p>\n
The road construction projects will be offered to developers
\nthrough a public tender.<\/p>\n
The government-funded flyover projects will be constructed
\nnear Cempaka Putih crossroad in Central Jakarta; in Pasar Rebo,
\nEast Jakarta; Tanjung Barat, South Jakarta and between Jl.
\nPramuka and Jl. Pemuda in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
City Council's Head of Commission D on development affairs,
\nSayogo Hendrosubroto, praised the road projects, saying they
\nwould help the city administration solve traffic congestion.<\/p>\n
\"Due to their importance, the city council will tighten its
\nsupervision of the projects,\" Sayogo said.<\/p>\n
He added that the city administration would help the central
\ngovernment when construction of the four overpasses commenced.<\/p>\n
Chief of the city's land transportation office, Buyung Atang,
\nsaid earlier that the city administration would propose an
\noverpass near Pulogadung bus terminal in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
In response to the plan, Sayogo said the council has yet to
\nreceive any proposal on the construction plan.<\/p>\n
He also said an overpass would be less valuable if the bus
\nterminal, the cause of the notorious traffic problems in the
\narea, was moved to Pulogebang near Bekasi in West Java.<\/p>\n
The city administration has approved the removal of the
\novercrowded terminal and construction of the new terminal will
