        "content": "<p>Work on nuclear plant to begin<\/p>\n<p>Suherdjoko, The Jakarta Post, Semarang<\/p>\n<p>Work on the much-disputed Muria nuclear power plant (PLTN) in<br>\nJepara regency, Central Java, will start soon, a senior<br>\ngovernment official said in Semarang on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Arnold Y. Soetrisnanto, head of the Nuclear Energy<br>\nDevelopment Center of the National Nuclear Power Agency (Batan),<br>\nsaid that the agency would commence a feasibility study into the<br>\nproject sometime this year.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The power plant will consist of six generator units, each<br>\ncapable of generating 1,000 megawatts (MW),&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that as projected, the scheme would cost US$12<br>\nbillion and, according to the schedule, would be completed in<br>\n2016.<\/p>\n<p>Building construction on the project would take around six to<br>\nseven years.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We are cooperating with people affected by the construction<br>\nof the nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We hope that they will agree with the project,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to a preliminary study, people living near the site<br>\nof the project agreed with it, but those living further away were<br>\nagainst the idea.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&apos;t know the details as we are only dealing with the<br>\ntechnology field,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The areas that have been surveyed in Jepara are Ujung Watu,<br>\nUjung Lemah Abang, Ujung Grenggongan and Balong.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the head of the Social and Cultural Studies<br>\nCenter of Diponegoro University, Semarang, Mujahirin Thohir, who<br>\nobtained first-hand information from the public said: &quot;We<br>\narranged a series of group discussions in which there were three<br>\ncategories of people: the first said they were familiar with the<br>\npurposes and safety precautions for nuclear technology, the<br>\nsecond was uncertain and the third, mostly from non-governmental<br>\norganizations, rejected the idea.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The planned construction of the power plant was once strongly<br>\nprotested in 1997 to 1998 during the New Order regime, and was<br>\nnever heard of during the Abdurrahman Wahid government.<\/p>\n<p>According to Arnold, the government would involve private<br>\nparties in the funding of the project, including Korea Hydro &amp;<br>\nNuclear Power Company.<\/p>\n<p>The realization of Muria PLTN is hoped to increase electricity<br>\ngeneration capacity.<\/p>",
