Work on nuclear plant to begin<\/p>\n

Work on the much-disputed Muria nuclear power plant (PLTN) in
\nJepara regency, Central Java, will start soon, a senior
\ngovernment official said in Semarang on Monday.<\/p>\n
Arnold Y. Soetrisnanto, head of the Nuclear Energy
\nDevelopment Center of the National Nuclear Power Agency (Batan),
\nsaid that the agency would commence a feasibility study into the
\nproject sometime this year.<\/p>\n
"The power plant will consist of six generator units, each
\ncapable of generating 1,000 megawatts (MW)," he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that as projected, the scheme would cost US$12
\nbillion and, according to the schedule, would be completed in
\n2016.<\/p>\n
Building construction on the project would take around six to
\nseven years.<\/p>\n
"We are cooperating with people affected by the construction
\nof the nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n
"We hope that they will agree with the project," he said.<\/p>\n
According to a preliminary study, people living near the site
\nof the project agreed with it, but those living further away were
\nagainst the idea.<\/p>\n
"I don't know the details as we are only dealing with the
\ntechnology field," he said.<\/p>\n
The areas that have been surveyed in Jepara are Ujung Watu,
\nUjung Lemah Abang, Ujung Grenggongan and Balong.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, the head of the Social and Cultural Studies
\nCenter of Diponegoro University, Semarang, Mujahirin Thohir, who
\nobtained first-hand information from the public said: "We
\narranged a series of group discussions in which there were three
\ncategories of people: the first said they were familiar with the
\npurposes and safety precautions for nuclear technology, the
\nsecond was uncertain and the third, mostly from non-governmental
\norganizations, rejected the idea."<\/p>\n
The planned construction of the power plant was once strongly
\nprotested in 1997 to 1998 during the New Order regime, and was
\nnever heard of during the Abdurrahman Wahid government.<\/p>\n
According to Arnold, the government would involve private
\nparties in the funding of the project, including Korea Hydro &
\nNuclear Power Company.<\/p>\n
The realization of Muria PLTN is hoped to increase electricity
\ngeneration capacity.<\/p>",
