Work as usual for Zulfan, despite investigation<\/p>\n

In the hot seat over his alleged criminal activity, including
\nextortion, Ciputat Police chief Adj. Comr. Zulfan is still
\nworking in his office as usual, an officer from the National
\nPolice headquarters revealed.<\/p>\n
"So far, we have questioned five people over the reports,
\nincluding Zulfan himself. Two of the witnesses are not from the
\nforce," Brig. Gen. Soenarko D.A., the headquarters' deputy
\nspokesman, said on Friday. "But the probe is not yet completed."<\/p>\n
However, Zulfan's subordinate who made the report against him
\nwas moved to the South Jakarta Police station.<\/p>\n
First Insp. Ahmad Kusdinar had earlier reported that Zulfan
\nhad pointed a gun at his head during an argument.<\/p>\n
But Soenarko said the reshuffle was an attempt to "cool down
\nthe internal situation at the Ciputat Police station".<\/p>\n
A source from the South Jakarta Police said the argument
\nbetween Zulfan and Ahmad had taken place in January when the
\nlatter was about to move a truck -- which had been involved in a
\nfatal accident -- to the South Jakarta Police station as ordered
\nby the station's chief.<\/p>\n
Trying to stop Kusdinar from moving the truck, Zulfan also
\ntook out his gun. Sources have said that Zulfan took money from
\nthe truck owner, who wanted the case to be closed.<\/p>\n
However, earlier on Monday, National Police spokesman Insp.
\nGen. Basyir Ahmad Barmawi said that what had happened between
\nZulfan and Ahmad was "merely a miscommunication."<\/p>\n
Zulfan is also facing at least five charges of extortion, four
\noccurred in October and one in January. The amount of money
\nallegedly received by Zulfan was a total of Rp 258.5 million
\n(US$31,144).<\/p>\n
Besides revealing the latest findings of the investigation of
\nZulfan, Soenarko defended the force's decision to promote former
\nWest Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Bambang Wasgito as Bogor
\nPolice chief, despite his bad track record.<\/p>\n
"I want to clarify media reports questioning Bambang's new
\npost...The internal affairs division of the National Police found
\nno strong evidence to secure the allegations on Bambang."<\/p>\n
Last June, Bambang faced an inquiry over extortion
\nallegations. He was also reported to the police for receiving
\nmillions of rupiah from the owners of gambling dens in West
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
One of those who filed a report was House of Representatives
\nmember Haryanto Taslam, who submitted copies of several receipts,
\nincluding a receipt for Rp 2 million in cash from the owner of a
\ngambling den to pay Bambang's karaoke bills.<\/p>\n
Soenarko declined to answer whether by declaring Bambang
\nclean the police were suggesting the copies of the receipts were
\nfake.<\/p>",
