The realization of people's sovereignty through a general
\nelection, a change in the country's powerholders and brokered
\npeace in conflict areas are highly susceptible to bloodshed.
\nViolence is being used as a response to the problems of political
\nuncertainty, inertia of the law and economic turbulence.<\/p>\n
Arson, torture, rape, killing and slaughter have taken place
\nin a number of areas: Ambon, Banyuwangi, Jakarta, Ketapang,
\nKupang, Liquica, Palembang, Purbalingga, Sambas and Solo. There
\nare no signs that all this will automatically stop. The nation is
\nin darkness. It is this darkness which creates a specific trauma
\nfor women. Women become victims of sexual violence in the attacks
\ndirected at them.<\/p>\n
Thousands of women, ripped from their daily lives, walk long
\ndistances over many kilometers, give birth in trucks and lose
\ntrack of their relatives as they are forced to become refugees
\nlooking for protection. Their shelters turn out to be emergency
\ncamps crowded with people, sometimes isolated, roofless, lacking
\nfood and medicine, with awful sanitation and a high risk of
\ndisease.<\/p>\n
Outside conflict areas, in their own houses, an increasing
\nnumber of women face threats and violence from their husbands,
\nwho vent their anxiety and anger caused by the protracted crisis.
\nThe impact of this will last into the next generation.<\/p>\n
Kartini said: \"After darkness there will be light\". Where is
\nthe turning point of the darkness toward the brightness of peace?<\/p>\n
Women have the potential to play a large role in resolving
\nthis situation of violence because women are the first victims of
\nviolence. The National Commission on Anti-Violence against Women
\ninvites all Indonesian women to become peace brokers in their
\nrespective environments.<\/p>\n
All the activities in the context of the general election, the
\nchange of power and peacekeeping in conflict areas must be safe
\nand imbued with human integrity. The commission demands,
\nespecially of the General Elections Commission and the government
\napparatus, including the Armed Forces, the necessary guarantees
\nof peace to the whole nation be turned into reality.<\/p>\n
