Women's roles<\/p>\n

Although women account for the more than half of the
\nIndonesian population, conditions for them until now have been
\nquite disconcerting as seen by their far below standard of
\nliving. Many women as well as their babies die during childbirth.
\nCompared to women in other Southeast Asian countries, Indonesian
\nwomen live under the most alarming conditions.<\/p>\n
Therefore, it would be appropriate if a widely protective
\nmovement for women and children was started through the mass
\nmedia as it could generate deep concern from the government, non-
\ngovernmental organizations, journalists and educated social
\ncircles.<\/p>\n
A group of journalists in cooperation with Unicef has promoted
\nthe cause of women and children. They have established the Forum
\nWartawan Penulis Peduli Wanita dan Anak (The Journalist Forum for
\nWomen and Children) which holds various scientific discussions.
\nHopefully, all parties can support its role.<\/p>\n
In the efforts to build qualified future Indonesian
\ngenerations, it's time Indonesian women were given more chances
\nin the political, social and economic fields. It seems that the
\ntrend toward globalization now offers unlimited and unrestrained
\ncareer opportunities for women.<\/p>\n
All of us hope to be able to gain a new consciousness in
\nrespecting and appreciating women's roles so that Kartini's
\naspiration of emancipation lightens all the more in the middle of
\nthe reform era.<\/p>\n
