Women's activist to enter politics<\/p>\n
CIREBON, West Java: After actress Nurul Arifin joined up with
\nthe Golkar Party, activist Nursyahbani Katjasungkana followed
\nsuit but said she had yet to decide which party she would join.<\/p>\n
Nursyahbani, chairwoman of the Indonesian Women's Coalition
\n(KPI), disclosed that many small political parties, and three
\nlarger parties -- Golkar, the National Mandate Party (PAN) and
\nthe National Awakening Party (PKB) -- have invited her to join
\nthem.<\/p>\n
Nursyahbani said she would likely sign on with PAN because she
\nhad pioneered women's empowerment in the party.<\/p>\n
She said she would make a decision by December when the
\nGeneral Election Commission announced which parties were eligible
\nfor the elections.<\/p>\n
Nursyahbani said she would encourage other activists to enter
\npolitics so that high quality women could fill the quota of 30

JAKARTA: The Singaporean Embassy in Jakarta has decided to
\ncancel a reception to observe its National Day at the Shangri-La
\nHotel on Aug. 19 out of respect for the victims of the Aug. 5 JW
\nMarriot Hotel blast.<\/p>\n
The Embassy had already printed invitations for the reception
\nand distributed them to government officials and other figures
\nand diplomats several days before the tragedy.<\/p>\n
In a special letter dated Aug. 13, however, Ambassador Edward
\nLee said that the embassy canceled the reception.<\/p>\n
At least were 12 people killed and more than 140 others

JAMBI CITY, Jambi: Law No. 40\/1999 on the press can not be
\nimplemented smoothly if legal enforcers instead use the Criminal
\nCode (KUHP) in dealing with violations within and against the
\nmass media.<\/p>\n
Vice Chairman of the Press Council RH Siregar said on Thursday
\nthat legal enforcers were accustomed to charging journalists for
\nviolations in their stories.<\/p>\n
\"Legal charges are based on article 55 of the KUHP which
\ncontradicts the press law. The press law requires the police and
\nother law enforcers to charge publishing companies for the
\nviolation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Siregar said there would not be real press freedom if the
\npress law was not fully implemented.<\/p>\n
He called on the press community and the police to seek ways
\nto amend either the KUHP or the press law so that there was
