        "content": "<p>Women to lead navy warships<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Navy yesterday challenged its women corps to<br>\ntake command of one of its warships, with Chief of Staff Tanto<br>\nKoeswanto saying he believe them to be just as capable as men.<\/p>\n<p>In a written speech at the ceremony to mark the Navy Women<br>\nCorps (Kowal)&apos;s 32nd anniversary, Tanto said the Navy would begin<br>\ndeploying women in warships previously restricted to male<br>\npersonnel.<\/p>\n<p>Those deployed should aim to become the ship&apos;s command one<br>\nday, according to the speech read by deputy for logistic affairs<br>\nRear Admiral Achmad Muchammad, Antara news agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluation of the recent Armada Jaya XVII\/94 naval exercise<br>\nshow that women&apos;s capabilities enable them to replace men in<br>\nwarships, he said. The evaluation also concludes that the women<br>\ncorps should be allowed to assume some of the jobs now solely<br>\nhandled by men, Tanto said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We should give Kowal personnel the chance to assume<br>\noperational and strategic posts in the Navy.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The Navy has two candidates in mind. Second Lieutenant Runi<br>\nArumdati and Second Lieutenant Srijohan, who have commanded<br>\nsmall, unarmed naval vessels. They will be the first females to<br>\nbe commissioned on warships, according to Navy Chief Spokesman<br>\nCol. Totok Laksito.<\/p>\n<p>Totok said this will be a major departure. &quot;Commanding an<br>\nunarmed ship is flying the Navy&apos;s banner. But commanding a<br>\nwarship is flying the nation&apos;s honor.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Kowal currently has 858 members, including 362 officers.
