Women killed after marriage proposal<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Holding back tears and looking down at the
\nfloor, the confessed killer of the woman whose dismembered body
\nwas found in two separate places last week revealed the bizarre
\nmurder to reporters yesterday.<\/p>\n
Uki Wardana, 24, told a flock of crime reporters that he
\nkilled, mutilated and dumped the body of his girlfriend, Rahayu
\nChaeranti, also known as Butet, 29, all by himself.<\/p>\n
The suspect, who claimed to be a first sergeant in the Air
\nForce, said he decided to kill the girl who had been going out
\nwith him for about two years, because he was unprepared to marry
\nher.<\/p>\n
\"I was very scared. She said her period was late. She said she
\nwas pregnant. She was pushing me to marry her,\" Uki told the
\nmedia at the East Jakarta Police station.<\/p>\n
According to Uki, the murder took place at his boardinghouse
\non Jl. Yusufyah in Lubang Buaya, East Jakarta on Friday afternoon
\nwhen the victim kept on insisting that he marry her.<\/p>\n
Surrounded by police officers, the depressed-looking man
\nrefused to answer most of the reporters' numerous questions.<\/p>\n
\"I felt terrible,\" was all he could finally say.<\/p>\n
When asked whether he was motivated to commit the sadistic
\nmurder by a similar horror killing of another woman, whose body
\nwas found in Tangerang the previous week, Uki grimly said, \"It's
\nmy fault.\"<\/p>\n
Uki, or Luki as police named him in their report, was arrested
\nat his boardinghouse (not at a security post near Halim
\nPerdanakusuma airbase as reported earlier) at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday
\nbased on information given by Butet's relatives, who had
\nidentified the remains at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital
\nseveral hours earlier.<\/p>\n
Parts of Butet's body were first found, without the head,
\nneck, legs or hands, on Saturday morning floating in a fishpond
\nin Pondok Ranggon, Cipayung, also in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The remaining body parts were found Monday at about 11:30 a.m.
\nin bushes some 200 meters from a runway at the Halim
\nPerdanakusuma airbase by two Air Force patrol officers.<\/p>\n
According to city police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang, Uki
\ntold police interrogators that he killed her with a machete,
\nwhich measured about five centimeters by 30 centimeters long.<\/p>\n
\"At about 2 p.m. Luki murdered the girl and dismembered her
\nbody two hours later.<\/p>\n
He took a cab to dump the first body pieces in Pondok Ranggon
\nlater that night, Aritonang told reporters separately yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"The remaining pieces of her body (head, feet and hands) were
\ndumped at Halim Perdanakusuma on the next morning at about 2
\na.m.,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The case is being handled by East Jakarta Police station.<\/p>\n
Uki's status in the Air Force was still being checked,
\naccording to City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman.<\/p>\n
\"He told the police that he is in the Air Force. We're
\ncurrently checking his background. If it is true (that he's a
\nmember of the Armed Forces) the case will be handed over to the
\nmilitary police,\" Noegroho told reporters yesterday.<\/p>\n
He did not reveal why the police should have spent quite a
\nlong time only checking the suspect's status.<\/p>\n
The unofficial reenactment of the killing was carried out at 2
\na.m. Monday at the scene of the crime in Lubang Buaya.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, forensic experts from Cipto Mangunkusumo were
\ntrying yesterday to put Butet's body back together before her
\nburial.<\/p>\n
Bambang H.P., one of the forensic staff, said that the body
\ncould not be well joined as some was still missing.<\/p>\n
According to Eduardsyah, the victim's uncle, the remains would
\nbe buried yesterday evening at Pondok Kelapa public cemetery in
\nEast Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He said that Butet's parents died several years ago and she
\nlived with her uncle, Razali, on Jl. Gunung Slamet at Mas Naga
\nhousing complex at Bintara Jaya, West Bekasi.<\/p>\n
Eduardsyah said he and his other relatives had met Uki at the
\npolice precinct and confirmed that the suspect was Butet's
\nboyfriend.<\/p>\n
\"I do not bear any grudge for the murder, because I don't know
\nthe suspect very well. It was Butet's fate,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Eduardsyah recalled the days when he and the other relatives
\nwere painfully searching for Butet.<\/p>\n
He said the family remained suspicious after viewing the
\nmutilated body on Sunday for identification purposes because the
\nidentifying marks which could have been recognized by her
\nrelatives were all on the missing body parts.<\/p>\n
Butet had surgery marks on her neck and a dog bite mark on her
\nlower leg, he said.<\/p>\n
They were sure it was Butet's body only after they came again
\non Monday evening following the finding of the missing parts.
