Women entrepreneurs<\/p>\n
It is with considerable interest that I have read the report
\nof Asia Development Bank on Women Entrepreneurs Indonesia. As the
\neconomy is becoming more competitive, many countries are
\nexperiencing \" Entrepreneurial Revolution\" with women playing a
\nvery important roles in creating jobs and services, particularly
\nin the service sector, and in many instances becoming the sole
\nbread winners.<\/p>\n
In fact , enabling women to own and operate their own
\nbusinesses is more significant in those countries where deep
\nrooted traditions do not , as yet, allow many women to either
\nwork outside of their home or take jobs.<\/p>\n
Also some of these countries have as yet to recognize that
\nproviding opportunities for women to seek higher education is
\nfundamental to their own development.<\/p>\n
It is admirable that although women still face the
\nchallenges of funding gap and role conflict, research shows that
\nthey are being successful as entrepreneurs every where. (I will
\nnot bother you with the statistics).<\/p>\n
Although research in this important area is still
\nongoing, some other reasons for their success are:<\/p>\n
1. Women are extremely good at creating networks, which
\nthen provide strong structures and support for their success. In
\nother words, they see their businesses as co-operative
\nnetworks of relationships than merely profit making entities.<\/p>\n
2.Women entrepreneurs demonstrate strong negotiating
\nskills when dealing with their suppliers, customers, employee,
\netc, and at the same time they know how to reconcile conflicting
\ndemands and balance priorities vis-a- vis their home life.<\/p>\n
3. Women entrepreneurs demonstrate good social skills and are
\nusually very articulate and persuasive; these skills enable
\nthem to create repeat customers and appeal to the senses of the
\nfirst time buyer of a new product.<\/p>\n
4. In the business world, when negotiating with a bank or
\nventure capitalist for loans, women are perceived to be more
\nsincere, responsible and committed to their new undertaking.<\/p>\n
5. Women entrepreneurs also demonstrate more sensitivity
\nto the environmental issues, and they are less likely to violate
\ngovernment regulations.<\/p>\n
6. Finally, when these women entrepreneurs make money,
\nthey prove to be astute in the money management skills.<\/p>\n
7. However, by and large, women entrepreneurs are
\nmore cautious risks takers than men.<\/p>\n
It is most encouraging to read that the ADB report on Women
\nEntrepreneurs is confirming some of the factors contributing to
\nthe success of these women, what some of us in the field, have
\nknown for some time.<\/p>\n
