Woman found dead<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: A female employee of a pulp and paper
\nfactory, PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP), was found dead in
\nher room at the company's dormitory here on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n
Police said that the death of Evi, 22, was discovered when a
\nrelative named Joni, 30, came to visited her.<\/p>\n
Riau Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. S Pandiangan said that
\nJoni found Evi's room locked. Joni knocked at the door but there
\nwas no response.<\/p>\n
Together with his driver, Joni broke open the door to Evi's
\nroom and found the woman \"sleeping under the blanket\".<\/p>\n
Joni reported his discovery to the police. \"But we have yet to
\nreach a conclusion about the cause of the woman's death,\" said

Seven Afghan boat people escape<\/p>\n
BATAM, Riau: Seven of the 77 Afghan boat people accommodated
\nin the Batam immigration detention center since May 2 have
\nescaped, an official confirmed on Friday.<\/p>\n
The head of the Batam Immigration Office, Mardjono, said that
\nthe seven persons had disappeared from the detention center some
\ndays ago. \"They may still be in Batam or living on islets in
\nRiau.\"<\/p>\n
\"We are collaborating with the local police in seeking them,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Mardjono said that the fate of the remaining 70 Afghan boat
\npeople stranded in Batam was uncertain. \"The United Nations High
\nCommissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has yet to decide on their
\nstatus.\"<\/p>\n
Batam is one of the centers used for detaining Afghan boat
\npeople who have been dreaming of a better life in Australia. The
\nother centers are Medan (North Sumatra), Jakarta, Bogor (West
\nJava) Cilacap (Central Java), Denpasar (Bali), Mataram (West Nusa

Number of scholarship applicants up<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: The number of applicants for postgraduate and
\ndoctoral scholarships in the province of Riau increased from 145
\nlast year to 300 this year, according to an official.<\/p>\n
The head of the provincial Social Affairs Bureau, H. Mustafa
\nKamal, said here on Friday that only 129 of the applicants would
\nbe granted the scholarships, both for study within the country
\nand overseas.<\/p>\n
\"The Riau administration has allotted Rp 12 billion for
\npostgraduate and doctoral scholarship programs this year,\"
\nMustafa said.<\/p>\n
He added that most of the applicants were students who were

Manado traffic getting worse<\/p>\n
MANADO, North Sulawesi: Traffic in the North Sulawesi capital
\nof Manado is getting worse from day to day with severe congestion
\nconstantly taking place on main thoroughfares and in the downtown
\narea.<\/p>\n
Traffic from all directions converge on certain areas, leaving
\nat least seven spots vulnerable to traffic congestion.<\/p>\n
Jl. Sam Ratulangi, Jl. Yos Sudarso, Jl. Sarapung, Jl.
\nMartadinata, Jl. Pierre Tendean, Jl. Dr. Sutomo and the Pasar 45
\narea in downtown Manado are heavily congested everyday.<\/p>\n
The increasing number of vehicles has been cited as the main
\ncause of the traffic woes, but recently traffic light outages
\nhave been contributing to the problem.<\/p>\n
Head of the Manado Transportation Office Noldy Kewas said
\nhere on Friday that road repair and other development projects
\nhad also worsened the situation.<\/p>\n
\"The attitude of public transportation drivers is another
\nmatter,\" he said.<\/p>\n
According to the transportation office, 4,600 of the 9,000
\nvehicles on the city's roads are public transportation vehicles.

Social affairs office revived<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: The social affairs office in
\nSoutheast Sulawesi province will soon be revived after being
\nmerged with the health office last March.<\/p>\n
Provincial Secretary Yokoyama Sinapoy said here on Friday that
\nthe revival was meant to ensure that more attention would be paid
\nto the increasing number of social problems in the province.<\/p>\n
The draft of the bylaw on the revival of the social affairs
\noffice had been submitted to the provincial legislative council,
\nSinapoy said.<\/p>\n
\"The deliberation of the bylaw is expected to take place
\nbefore December so that funding for social affairs activities can

Foreign ships operating in Bengkulu<\/p>\n
BENGKULU, Bengkulu: Six Thai fishing vessels have been
\noperating in Mukuo-Muko Utara waters off North Bengkulu regency.<\/p>\n
Reports say that the Thai fishermen were choosy about the fish
\nthey caught.<\/p>\n
\"They catch only expensive fish. They just dump the dead fish
\nthey don't want,\" a local fisherman, Syaiful, said.<\/p>\n
Local fishermen allege that the Thai ships have been operating
\nin the area for a long time but that it was only in October that
\nthey reported the matter to the district chief executive's
\noffice.<\/p>\n
Mukuo-Muko Utara district chief executive Ferizal Syamsul said
\nhe had sent a letter to the regent over the Thai fishermen's
\npresence, copies of which had also been sent to the Bengkulu
\ngovernor, Bengkulu Naval Base commander and the Marine and
\nFisheries Office.<\/p>\n
Ferizal did not say when the letters were sent, or if any of
