Woman faces one year in jail<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An unemployed woman on trial on Thursday for
\npossessing and smoking marijuana broke down when a prosecutor
\ndemanded a one-year jail term for her.<\/p>\n
Wirdaningsih, 31, urged presiding judge Rusdy As'ad at the
\nCentral Jakarta District Court to give her a lighter punishment,
\nsaying that a year in prison was too much for her.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor A. Halim Ronie said Wirdaningsih was guilty of
\nillegally possessing 24 marijuana cigarettes and smoking others
\nwhen examined by police officers during one of their regular
\noperations in June.<\/p>\n
\"She was guilty of violating Law no. 9\/1976 on narcotics,\"
\nHalim said.<\/p>\n
The requested punishment is lighter than the minimum
\nstipulated in the existing law. The legislation says the maximum
\npunishment is death.<\/p>\n
Halim said that Wirdaningsih was arrested on June 26 when she
\nand seven friends were on their way home in a Kijang van from
\nMarimba discotheque in Hotel Central on Jl. Pramuka in Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Police found the marijuana joints in a cigarette pack
\nbelonging to the defendant, he said.<\/p>\n
Wirdaningsih, of Jl. Sunan Drajat, had been detained in Pondok
\nBambu since the arrest, Halim said.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Rusdy adjourned the trial until next week to
