Woman activist gets int'l award<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: Ngatini Tarmuji, a resident of Anggrek
\nvillage, Pantai Labu district in Deli Serdang regency, has been
\nselected to receive an award from the Geneva-based Women's World
\nSummit Foundation (WWSF) for her struggle to fight a land
\nexpropriation conducted by a military cooperative in 1991.<\/p>\n
The Foundation said that the mother of five, along with 33
\nother recipients, was chosen among 200 nominees for the Prize for
\nWomen's Creativity in Rural Life.<\/p>\n
Ngatini will receive a US$500 cash prize with the award.<\/p>\n
The land dispute occurred in 1991 when a local military
\ncooperative expropriated land belonging to local villagers to be
\nconverted into a palm oil plantation.<\/p>\n
Throughout the adversity, the 49-year-old Ngatini actively
\nlobbied the National Land Agency, local authorities, including
\nmilitary and police, and established a network with students,
\nnongovernmental organizations and legal institutions to fight the
\nexpropriation.<\/p>\n
Villagers now occupy the land despite the fact that they still
\ndo not possess ownership papers.<\/p>\n
Ngatini has continued her activism and become a leader of a
\nlocal woman's group which successfully lobbied the central
\ngovernment to provide Angrek village with better irrigation,
\nelectricity, public school, a mosque and transportation
