Witnesses testify peers killed student in brawl<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two students testified before the Central
\nJakarta District Court on Friday that fellow students from SMU 24
\nHigh School fatally stabbed and stoned a student from another
\nhigh school.<\/p>\n
\"The two witnesses testified that they saw the killing of the
\nSMU 7 student during the brawl last June,\" prosecutor Nurfah S.Y.
\nsaid after the trial, which was closed to the public.<\/p>\n
\"They admitted that they were involved in the brawl, but later
\nmanaged to escape from police arrest.<\/p>\n
\"However, they denied involvement in the killing.\"<\/p>\n
Seven of the South Jakarta high school's students -- Tanuri,
\nRichmansyah, Talon, M. Riefansyah, Andi Riswandi, Suryadin and
\nZefri Samsudin -- were indicted by Nurfah in a trial last week
\nfor killing Alfi Syahril, whose school is located in Bendungan
\nHilir subdistrict, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Alfi died in an after-school brawl on Jl. Sudirman, Central
\nJakarta, on June 30.<\/p>\n
Nurfah said the seven students were indicted under Article 170
\nof the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 12
\nyears in jail.<\/p>\n
She said the seven students attacked the victim with machetes,
\nknives and stones.<\/p>\n
An autopsy said Alfi suffered a severe injury to the back of
\nhis head which caused massive brain damage.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Endang Sumarsih has declared the trial closed
\nto the public because the students are minors.<\/p>\n
Endang told The Jakarta Post after Friday's trial that the
\ncourt would likely impose a jail term on the defendants if they
\nwere convicted.<\/p>\n
\"If the victim had not died, we might have considered
\nremanding them in their parents' custody or sending them to a
\njuvenile detention center in Tangerang,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Parents of Alfi and the defendants joined students from both
\nschools at the courthouse on Friday despite the judge's ruling to
\nbar them from the courtroom.<\/p>\n
Alfi's mother, Rahmalina, 38, said that she expected the judge
\nto uphold the law and sentence them according to their crime.<\/p>\n
\"Although they are still students, the judge should sentence
\nthem in accordance with the law,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Rahmalina said she was continually reminded of Alfi. \"Whenever
\nI see teenagers in high school uniforms, I always remember him.\"<\/p>\n
Alfi's father Abu Somad, 43, said religious instruction was
\nimportant to stop students resorting to violence.<\/p>\n
\"We should teach good behavior and conduct to students through
\nreligion,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Endang adjourned the trial until next Friday when other
