Washington (ANTARA) - Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated on Friday\n(27\/3) that the US will hold a meeting with Iran at least \u201cthis week\u201d,\nwhile President Donald Trump is reportedly seeking a \u201cpeace agreement\u201d\namid the ongoing US-Israel attacks.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe expect there to be a meeting this week and certainly hope it will\nhappen. Ships are starting to pass through; this is a positive sign, and\nI think the president wants a peace deal,\u201d Steve Witkoff said in his\nstatement at an investment forum in Miami.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is what I mean by negotiation, and we will not stop until this\nprocess is complete. We have also proposed that,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, separately, Trump claimed that Iran wants to hold\ntalks.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have been destroyed. They want to talk, and we want it too; now\nthey want to make a deal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Foreign Minister Marco Rubio stated that Washington expects to\nconclude its military campaign against Iran \u201cin weeks, not months\u201d, and\nthe US can achieve its objectives without deploying troops on the\nground.<\/p>\n
The US and Israel have conducted airstrikes against Iran since 28\nFebruary, killing more than 1,340 people.<\/p>\n
Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, as\nwell as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets,\nresulting in casualties and infrastructure damage, as well as disrupting\nglobal markets and aviation.<\/p>\n
Additionally, at least 13 US military members have been killed since\nthe war began, in a conflict that has driven up energy prices and\naffected shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
