Wiranto to be sworn in to replace Hendro<\/p>\n

JAKARTA (JP): Former City Military Chief of Staff Brig. Gen.
\nWiranto is scheduled to be inducted as new Jakarta Military
\nCommander this morning to replace Maj. Gen. AM Hendropriyono.<\/p>\n
The induction ceremony will be led by Army Chief of Staff Gen.
\nWismoyo Arismunandar at the city military headquarters on Jl.
\nSutoyo, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Last Monday Brig. Gen. Wiranto handed over the position of
\nchief of staff of the command to Col. Sutiyoso.<\/p>\n
In an interview with The Jakarta Post in Bandung, West Java,
\non Saturday, Wiranto said: "I'll continue everything which has
\nbeen carried out and planned by my predecessor."<\/p>\n
As long as the plans are still valid for overcoming
\ncomplicated problems in the city, "we will maintain them, carry
\nout those plans as they have already been evaluated and analyzed
\nbefore being implemented," he said at the inauguration ceremony
\nof Hendropriyono as commander of the new Bandung-based Military
\nDoctrine Supervision, Education and Training Command.<\/p>\n
Born in Yogyakarta 47 years ago, the one-star general, who is
\nalso a member of the elite Indonesian Army's special red-beret
\nforce, finished his education in 1968 at the Magelang-based
\nNational Military Academy.<\/p>\n
Most of his career was spent in East Timor, especially between
\n1974 and 1979, during the Seroja Operation.<\/p>\n
In 1983, he joined the Army Staff Command School, a
\nprerequisite for any military members, to get a strategic
\nposition.<\/p>\n
Wiranto was assigned as an operational assistant at the 2nd
\nDivision of the Army Strategic Command in 1989 before being
\nappointed as an adjutant to President Soeharto for four years,
\nending last year.<\/p>\n
He was then appointed as the chief of staff of the city
\nmilitary command, the second top figure at the command, eight
\nmonths ago.<\/p>\n
His predecessor Hendropriyono commented: "The appointment of
\nWiranto is right because he is the person who, technically,
\ncarried out all our plans on the spot."<\/p>\n
Wiranto, father of three children, is currently preparing for
\nthe examination at the Military Law College and Open University.<\/p>\n
He is currently active in a number of sports organizations. As
\nchairman of the Jakarta chapter for Shooting Club and of the
\nIndonesian Bridge Association and as vice chairman of the
\nNational Taekwondo organization, as well as the Indonesian Boxing
\nCouncil.<\/p>\n
Like the other military batons, the new City Military
\nCommander will automatically become commander of the Jakarta
\nGarrison, which covers the city military, police, navy and air
\nforce. Wiranto will also become head of the Jakarta chapter of
\nthe Coordinating Agency for National Stability.<\/p>\n
The military baton in the capital city certainly needs a
\nqualified figure as the area, which covers Jakarta, Tangerang and
\nBekasi, is home to approximately 10 million people from different
\nethnic groups and economic levels. The area is prone to crime and
\nother social problems.<\/p>\n
Wiranto told the Post that he plans to continue the joint
\noperation against racketeers, juvenile delinquency, prostitution,
\nthe illegal distribution and sale of drugs and spirits, and any
\nyouth organizations which may have been used improperly.<\/p>\n
"We'll try to overcome all these problems together (with other
\nrelated officers) because these problems are all our problems,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
"For example, we will try to further improve the condition of
\na youth organization, which has conducted many incorrect
\nmatters," he said without giving details.<\/p>\n
It has been strongly believed that the induction of Winarto,
\nwill be followed later with the appointment of Deputy City Police
\nChief Brig. Gen. Dibyo Widodo, also an ex-adjutant to the
\nPresident, to replace the current City Police Chief, Maj. Gen.
\nMochammad Hindarto.<\/p>\n
A senior officer at the National Police Headquarters told the
\nPost recently that a decree for the appointment of Dibyo Widodo
\nas City Police Chief has already been issued.<\/p>\n
"It's just a matter of time for the inauguration," said the
\nsource, who refused to be named.<\/p>\n
It is highly expected that duo Wiranto-Dibyo could later
\ncleanse the simple-minded suspicion coming from certain parties
\nabout their capability in overcoming the complicated problems in
\nand around the city, in particular to demolish the so-called
\n"untouchable figures with invisible hands".<\/p>\n
"We have to fight hard (against these figures) in order to let
\nthe people feel free from anxiety," Hendro said.<\/p>",
