        "content": "<p>Wiranto to be indicted?<\/p>\n<p>We were startled upon reading reports that the United Nations<br>\nis going to indict Gen. (ret) Wiranto at the International<br>\nTribunal for rights violations in East Timor.<\/p>\n<p>Isn&apos;t it a kind of concoction that the UN will bring Wiranto<br>\nand some other generals to court for crimes against humanity<br>\ncommitted in East Timor around 1999?<\/p>\n<p>According to foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda, the UN, which<br>\nis present in East Timor in a supportive capacity, has no<br>\njudicial authority (to indict any Indonesian for any offense).<br>\nHassan said that the East Timor court&apos;s jurisdiction is limited<br>\nto East Timor, and the jurisdiction of Indonesian courts are also<br>\nrestricted to the archipelagic borders of Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Ad hoc trials have been ongoing in Jakarta&apos;s courts with<br>\nseveral civilian and military officials being tried for rights<br>\nviolations in the former Indonesian province just before the<br>\nreferendum was to be held there.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the People&apos;s Consultative Assembly Amien Rais has<br>\nsaid that bringing Wiranto to the International Tribunal would<br>\nnot happen.<\/p>\n<p>Any questions related to the issue (of bringing Wiranto to the<br>\ninternational court) were answered by the UN Secretary-General<br>\nspokesman Fred Eckhard, who said that it was the Timor Leste<br>\n(East Timor) Attorney General&apos;s Office, not the UN, that wanted<br>\nto indict Wiranto and several other Indonesian generals.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, misinformation on Indonesia has been disseminated by<br>\nthe Western media, especially issues connected to the military.<\/p>\n<p>The question is, are these professional mistakes, deliberate<br>\nerrors, or simply accidental inclusions?<\/p>\n<p>-- Kompas, Jakarta<\/p>",
