Wiranto to be indicted?<\/p>\n
We were startled upon reading reports that the United Nations
\nis going to indict Gen. (ret) Wiranto at the International
\nTribunal for rights violations in East Timor.<\/p>\n
Isn't it a kind of concoction that the UN will bring Wiranto
\nand some other generals to court for crimes against humanity
\ncommitted in East Timor around 1999?<\/p>\n
According to foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda, the UN, which
\nis present in East Timor in a supportive capacity, has no
\njudicial authority (to indict any Indonesian for any offense).
\nHassan said that the East Timor court's jurisdiction is limited
\nto East Timor, and the jurisdiction of Indonesian courts are also
\nrestricted to the archipelagic borders of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Ad hoc trials have been ongoing in Jakarta's courts with
\nseveral civilian and military officials being tried for rights
\nviolations in the former Indonesian province just before the
\nreferendum was to be held there.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly Amien Rais has
\nsaid that bringing Wiranto to the International Tribunal would
\nnot happen.<\/p>\n
Any questions related to the issue (of bringing Wiranto to the
\ninternational court) were answered by the UN Secretary-General
\nspokesman Fred Eckhard, who said that it was the Timor Leste
\n(East Timor) Attorney General's Office, not the UN, that wanted
\nto indict Wiranto and several other Indonesian generals.<\/p>\n
Recently, misinformation on Indonesia has been disseminated by
\nthe Western media, especially issues connected to the military.<\/p>\n
The question is, are these professional mistakes, deliberate
\nerrors, or simply accidental inclusions?<\/p>\n
