Wiranto new karate chairman<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Lt. Gen. Wiranto, the Army Strategic Reserves
\nCommander, is to chair the Indonesian Karate-do Federation until
\n2001.<\/p>\n
Wiranto, who is currently the Indonesian Contract Bridge
\nAssociation chairman and the Indonesian Taekwondo Association's
\nvice chairman, was picked to replace Rudini, a former minister of
\nhome affairs, on Tuesday in Bogor, West Java.<\/p>\n
Another candidate was Lt. Gen. Tarub, the Armed Forces General
\nAffairs' chief, who was backed by 11 karate schools.<\/p>\n
Kompas reported that the karate federation and the taekwondo
\nassociation had fought to have Wiranto as their chairman. But
\nWiranto picked the karate body after Rudini intervened in the
\ndispute.<\/p>\n
The Indonesia Karate-do chairman Eduard Tando said it would be
\na boost for the sport in Indonesia to have Wiranto leading the
\nfederation.<\/p>\n
\"We believe Wiranto, with all his strength, will bring karate
\nits rightful glory at the SEA Games, as he did with the bridge
\nassociation.<\/p>\n
\"We hope the Indonesian karate team will make a clean sweep in
\nthe games to mark the start of Wiranto's leadership,\" he said.<\/p>\n
George THE, Karate-do Kyushin Ryu Indonesia's chairman, said
\nthe incoming organizers must be able to activate the school
\ncouncil, which controls the referees board.<\/p>\n
\"The referees board is in a most critical condition. Much
\ndissatisfaction has been shown because referees are often accused
\nof being unfair in fights,\" George said.<\/p>\n
\"It happens because the council does not control the board
\nactively. The referees' quality is not improving at the same rate
