Wiranto asked to anticipate Jakarta problems<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Army Chief of Staff Gen. Wismoyo Arismunandar
\nasked newly-installed Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen.
\nWiranto yesterday to detect and stop any efforts made to
\nundermine the unity of the nation, as early as possible.<\/p>\n
In his speech at the induction of Wiranto as the new
\ncommander, replacing Maj. Gen Hendropriyono at the Jakarta
\nMilitary Headquarters, Wismoyo said that the power of the unity
\nand integrity of the nation \"requires conceptual, integrated,
\ndirected and continuous development to prevent attempts which
\ncould harm the nation's unity.<\/p>\n
As a big nation, with a diverse ethnic population, Indonesia
\nis always prone to situations which could threaten its unity and
\nintegrity, the four-star general said.<\/p>\n
Wismoyo therefore asked Wiranto, who had just received a rank
\npromotion to become major general only hours before, to \"fully
\nrecognize the characters and potency of the people involved to
\navoid alarming situations which could, in turn, weaken the
\nstrength of our nation\".<\/p>\n
Even though Wismoyo gave no further explanation, his statement
\ncould be interpreted as further revealing the connection between
\nthe removal of Wiranto's predecessor Maj. Gen. Hendropriyono and
\na series of public disturbances which have taken place in the
\ncity, especially during last month's Asia-Pacific Economic
\nCooperation (APEC) meeting.<\/p>\n
Wismoyo also asked the new officer to intensify cooperation
\nwith all related institutions and parties in the city.<\/p>\n
\"We realize that the area overseen by the Greater Jakarta
\nMilitary is quite complicated and challenging,\" he said.<\/p>\n
A number of security problems which occur here do not stand
\nalone but are frequently linked with social, economic and
\ncultural issues, he said.<\/p>\n
The security problems in the city are not just the
\nresponsibility of the military baton, but the whole community as
\nwell, Wismoyo said.<\/p>\n
Yesterday's ceremony was attended by approximately 2,000
\npeople from various social and economic areas. They included
\nState Minister of Youth and Sports Hayono Isman, State Minister
\nof Agrarian Affairs\/Chairman of the National Land Agency Soni
\nHarsono, a number of commanders of other regional military
\nbatons, military attaches of foreign countries, businessmen,
\nartists, press, relatives of President Soeharto and flamboyant
\nfigure, Yorrys Raweyai, of the Pemuda Pancasila youth
\norganization.<\/p>\n
The ceremony, which was also attended by hundreds of military,
\npolice, navy and air force personnel also presented a series of
\nattractions.<\/p>\n
The ceremony ended with the traditional farewell event in
\nwhich Hendro got into his private car, which he drove himself,
