Willem ready to replace Juan for training in Cuba<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian light welterweight (63.5 kgs) boxer
\nWillem Papilaya said he was ready to replace Juan Sapariban for
\nan overseas stint in Cuba before the national squad leaves for
\nthe Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur in September.<\/p>\n
Juan missed the program because he was not allowed to leave
\nthe Military School for Noncommissioned Officers in East Jakarta
\nfor more than a month.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association (Pertina) has
\nassigned Willem, who is a second sergeant of the Army's Special
\nForces (Kopassus), to fill Juan's place.<\/p>\n
\"I have received approval from my commander to leave my duty.
\nThe training session in Cuba will be my first experience.
\nAlthough I have just joined the SEA Games training on July 14, I
\nwill try to adjust myself to the training method,\" Willem said on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
Pertina picked up Willem earlier to replace Stevi Binalay in
\nthe same weight division. Stevi must be out of the ring for three
\nmonths after being knocked out twice at the Arafura Games in
\nAustralia in May and the King's Cup boxing championships in
\nBangkok early this month.<\/p>\n
Willem will fly to Cuba along with brother Albert Papilaya on
\nAug. 4. They will join four other boxers: Hendrik Simangunsong
\n(middleweight), Joko Suryono (light middleweight), Agustinus
\nRomroman (featherweight) and Bonix Saweho (light flyweight), who
\nhave been training in Cuba since July.<\/p>\n
Pertina's deputy secretary general Didiet Soedijoto said that
\nWillem's past experiences and good posture would help him in the
\ntraining.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that he can perform well.\"<\/p>\n
He said he had asked the coaches to prepare a special training
\nprogram for Willem and Albert.<\/p>\n
Starting on Aug. 1, the boxing training will be moved either
\nto Sukabumi or Cipanas, West Java. Boxers have been groomed at
\nKopassus' headquarters in Cijantung, East Jakarta, since July 1.<\/p>\n
The first phase of the training was conducted in Ragunan
\nsports school in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"The training project manager, Ignatius Mulyono, has agreed
\nthat the second phase of the training in Kopassus' headquarters
\nwould only last for one month. Certainly there are the positive
\nand negative impacts,\" Didiet said.<\/p>\n
\"The boxers find the training at the Cijantung distressful,
\nbecause all the officers are under pressure for the heated
\npolitical situation. The rules in the headquarters are also very
\nsevere, the boxers are not allowed to leave the site wearing an
\ninformal suit or sandals.<\/p>\n
\"On the other hand, moving the training venues will reduce the
\nboring situation. We also want to separate the training program
\nof SEA Games boxers with their juniors in Ragunan,\" he said.
