In an interview with Fox\nNews, Rubio said the decision is necessary to reassess NATO\u2019s strategic\nvalue for the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s beyond doubt, unfortunately, after this conflict ends,\nwe must review that relationship. We must review NATO\u2019s value in that\nalliance for our country,\u201d Rubio said, as quoted by AFP, Wednesday\n(1\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the final decision on the direction of that relationship\nlies with President Donald Trump,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Further, Rubio revealed that during his tenure as a senator, he was\none of NATO\u2019s strong supporters. Especially considering the significant\nbenefits from the alliance, particularly the presence of US military\nbases in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, those bases allow the US military to project power\nto various regions of the world. However, he questioned NATO\u2019s relevance\nif access to those facilities begins to be restricted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we have now reached the point where the NATO alliance means we\ncannot use those bases to defend American interests, then NATO is a\none-way street,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio also highlighted the stance of several European allies deemed\nnot to provide full support in the conflict against Iran. He noted that\nalthough the US did not request direct involvement in airstrikes, access\nto military bases is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we need them to allow the use of their military bases, the\nanswer is \u2018no\u2019? Then why are we in NATO? You have to ask that question,\u201d\nRubio said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement comes after several European countries reportedly\nrestricted US military access. Italy is said to have refused permission\nfor US military aircraft landing en route to the Middle East for combat\nmissions, while Spain closed its airspace to US aircraft involved in\noperations against Iran.<\/p>",
