Wildlife under increasing threat<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: The population of animals in Rawa
\nAopa Watumohai National Park near here is rapidly dwindling due
\nto poaching, the governor said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Governor La Ode Kaimoeddin said that under increasing threat
\nare small buffaloes endemic to Sulawesi called anoa, deer and
\nbirds.<\/p>\n
\"I'm afraid rare species like anoa and deer will be extinct in
\nthe near future unless proper steps are taken to conserve the
\nnatural resources,\" Kaimoeddin said, reported Antara.<\/p>\n
The 105,194 hectare Rawa Aopa Watumohai park was declared a
\nnational park on Dec. 17, 1990. It crosses the regencies of
\nKendari, Buton and Kolaka.<\/p>\n
The park boasts 155 recorded species of birds, 37 are endemic
\nto Sulawesi and 32 are endangered.<\/p>\n
Poachers use traps and operate at night to evade forest
\nrangers, whose numbers are far from adequate and who rely on
\nhorses and dogs for their operations. (pan)<\/p>",
