Wildfires Spread Across 7 Locations on East Java\u2019s Mount Semeru<\/p>\n

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Wildfires have spread across seven locations on\nMount Semeru in East Java, Indonesia, prompting authorities to deploy\nground crews and helicopters to contain the blaze in the Bromo Tengger\nSemeru National Park (TNBTS).<\/p>\n
The fires have affected an estimated 160 hectares of the national\npark, according to preliminary data from TNBTS personnel. Dry vegetation\nhas been among the materials burned in the fires.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fire hotspots are located in Ledok Bedor, Jantur Block,\nRanukembang Block, the Ayak-Ayak area, Watu Rejeng, Ranu Kumbolo, and\nTrisula Peak,\u201d said Yudhi Cahyono, head of the Emergency and Logistics\nDivision at the Lumajang Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), on\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
The fires are being tackled by personnel from the BPBD and TNBTS,\nalong with volunteers and local residents, in forest areas near Argosari\nand Ranupani villages in Senduro District, Lumajang Regency.<\/p>\n
Two helicopters provided by the East Java BPBD have also been\ndeployed to conduct water bombing operations over fire hotspots that are\ndifficult to reach by land.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe helicopters have been deployed to strengthen firefighting\nefforts at several fire hotspots that are difficult to reach by land,\u201d\nYudhi said.<\/p>\n
The Lumajang BPBD team has also sent two trail motorcycles toward the\nRanu Kumbolo hiking trail to survey fire hotspots and monitor the\nmovements of the PK-DAP helicopter during water bombing operations.<\/p>\n
The two helicopters were directed to the Ayak-Ayak Block and Bangunan\nCilik areas in Ranupani Village, Senduro District. Aerial firefighting\noperations were carried out alongside efforts by personnel on the\nground.<\/p>\n
Water bombing operations were temporarily suspended on Friday\nafternoon, August 28, because of strong winds. The East Java PK-DAP\nhelicopter subsequently returned to Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport to\nremain on standby.<\/p>\n
Firefighting in Difficult Terrain<\/p>\n
Agus Kusuma Negara, head of Section III of the TNBTS National Park\nmanagement office, said two areas had experienced extensive fires across\nseveral locations. He said the difficult terrain was among the factors\nbehind the use of aerial firefighting support.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne is in Ayak-Ayak, and the other is in Bangunan Cilik. The\nresponse efforts are being carried out collaboratively with water\nbombing assistance from the East Java BPBD,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Aerial firefighting operations are being used to support efforts on\nthe ground, while personnel continue to tackle the fires manually. Their\nefforts include creating firebreaks and using available equipment to\ncontrol fire hotspots that can be reached.<\/p>\n
The combination of aerial and ground operations is needed because of\nthe area\u2019s hilly terrain and the presence of fire hotspots in locations\nthat are difficult to access. Helicopters are being used to help reach\nareas that cannot be easily accessed by firefighting crews on the\nground.<\/p>\n
Monitoring to Prevent Fires From Spreading<\/p>\n
The firefighting operation involves TNBTS personnel, the Lumajang\nBPBD, volunteers and local residents, with additional support from the\nEast Java BPBD through the deployment of water bombing helicopters.<\/p>\n
Beyond extinguishing active flames, personnel are also monitoring\nareas that have already been treated to prevent the fires from\nreigniting.<\/p>\n
Follow-up monitoring remains necessary as firefighting teams work to\ncontain the blaze across the affected areas of Mount Semeru.<\/p>\n
