Wild elephants kill farmer in Lampung<\/p>\n
BANDARLAMPUNG, Lampung: A herd of wild elephants killed a
\nvillager who had allegedly encroached on protected park land in
\nLampung province to grow his crops, according to a park official.<\/p>\n
Dassa, the villager, was killed not far from his home in the
\npark after seven angry elephants attacked a group of villagers in
\nTenggamus regency last Saturday, Tamen Sitorus, the chief
\nofficial of the South Bukit Barisan National Park, said on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
\"The scene was still within the protected park area where
\npeople are not allowed to conduct any activity,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Dassa and other local farmers from Pekon Layang Agung, Datar
\nLebau, on Panggung island, had encroached on the land, where they
\nallegedly planted a field of crops.<\/p>\n
Following the incident the villagers drove the animals back
\ninto the forest, he said.<\/p>\n
Sitorus urged people living around the park not to conduct any
\nactivity that could damage the park's flora and fauna. --Antara<\/p>",
