Wife of militant ordered jailed<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: The home minister signed an order to jail for two years
\nthe wife of an Islamic militant suspect connected to the al-Qaeda
\nterrorist organization, a government source said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Sejahratul Dursina has been in police custody since April 17,
\nwhen she was arrested along with 13 other people under a tough
\nMalaysian security law on suspicion of links with an Islamic
\nmilitant group in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n
The Internal Security Act provides for an initial period of
\npolice detention, during which Home Minister Abdullah Ahmad
\nBadawi considers whether to send a detainee to a prison farm
\nunder a two-year order.<\/p>\n
Sejahratul, 37, is married to Yazid Sufaat, a former Malaysian
\narmy captain who has been jailed without trial since December on
\naccusations he let al-Qaeda members stay in an apartment that he

PHILIPPINES: Pantaleon Alvarez, a senior aide to Philippines
\nPresident Gloria Arroyo, quit his post as transportation and
\ncommunications secretary, a presidential spokesman said on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
Alvarez tendered his resignation effective June 10 after
\nCongress refused to ratify his appointment to the cabinet post,
\npresidential spokesman Silvestre Afable told reporters.<\/p>\n
Under the Philippine system, the legislature's Commission on
\nAppointments vets all nominees to the president's cabinet.<\/p>\n
Alvarez in a statement said he voluntarily resigned to stop an
\nalleged \"insidious smear campaign\" by his political enemies.<\/p>\n
He has previously fended off allegations of bias in the
\nawarding of a contract to build a new Manila international

MALAYSIA: Malaysia's opposition leader Fadzil Noor remained
\nunconscious and in critical condition over 72 hours after he
\nunderwent a five-hour heart bypass operation in a Kuala Lumpur
\nhospital, a news report said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Fadzil, 65, had been admitted last week for a routine-checkup
\nand his operation on Monday morning was described as an emergency
\nmeasure, online news site Malaysiakini.com said.<\/p>\n
He had last month complained of chest pains and his heart
\ncondition is believed to have been aggravated by the pace of the
\nrecent annual general assembly of his Parti Islam-Semalaysia
\n(PAS).<\/p>\n
Fadzil's ultra-conservative PAS is currently trying to get
\nIslamic criminal laws, or hudud, passed and implemented in
\nTerengganu state, which the party controls.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, PAS said Terengganu chief minister Abdul Hadi
