Why the parking fee hike?<\/p>\n

The media has recently carried reports that the Jakarta city
\nadministration is planning to raise parking fees. Many arguments
\nhave been put forward to support this plan and the most
\noutstanding is the one suggested by the city's parking management
\ncompany BP Parkir DKI. It argues that this hike will help reduce
\nthe number of private cars on the city's streets and therefore
\nease traffic jams.<\/p>\n
This argument makes little sense as there is no relationship
\nbetween parking fees, the use of private cars and traffic
\ncongestion.<\/p>\n
In my opinion, traffic jams are mainly caused by poor
\ndiscipline on the part of drivers, particularly those driving
\npublic transport vehicles. Also responsible for traffic jams are
\nstreet vendors in some streets. (Take a look at the streets round
\nKampung Rambutan bus terminal, Pulogadung bus terminal, Ciputat,
\nBlok M, Tanah Abang, Cijantung and Senen Triangle.)<\/p>\n
Obviously, it is not right to raise parking fees now,
\nespecially because the government is also planning to increase
\nfuel prices. What actually is the benefit of raising parking
\nfees, then?<\/p>\n
