Why not learn from history?<\/p>\n
The fall of all our governments, since independence, have been
\nprompted by their abuse of the public's aspirations. It was the
\nSept. 30 movement (G30S) and the involvement of the Indonesian
\nCommunist Party (PKI) -- cursed by the people -- that brought the
\nOld Order down.<\/p>\n
The New Order regime crashed because it was not responsive
\nenough to public demands for civilian supremacy. The next
\ngovernment had to \"release\" East Timor and subsequently got
\nIndonesia labeled a colonialist country, which is in direct
\ncontradiction to the preamble of the 1945 Constitution, which
\nclearly states Indonesia's stance against colonialism.<\/p>\n
The next government's wish to open diplomatic relations with
\nIsrael was not well received by most of the country's Muslims.
\nFrom here onward, various efforts to remove the president were
\nexerted, starting from issues on his health, the misuse of funds
\nand so forth.<\/p>\n
The current government is also being tested. Will it be able
\nto accommodate public aspirations? The news about the
\ngovernment's wish to send military troops to Afghanistan to join
\nthe United Nations force is not well received by religious
\nnationalists who intend to help the people of Afghanistan in
\ntheir fight against imperialism in all its forms.<\/p>\n
The government's attitude is considered less sympathetic
\ntoward the mysterious death of the charismatic Papuan leader,
\nTheys Hiyo Eluay, which has been linked to the military.<\/p>\n
The following are just a few of the long list of abuses of the
\npeople's aspirations: Rampant corruption, collusion and nepotism.
\nThe special committee on Buloggate II that has yet to exist. The
\nparalyzed law enforcement. The warm embrace given to Tommy
\nSoeharto by the city police chief that made it look like a staged
\narrest. The rise in various rates -- placing further costs on the
\nalready burdened public -- approved by the House of
\nRepresentatives (DPR), whose members were involved in a brawl,
\nthough not for defending or representing the public's
\naspirations.<\/p>\n
As all these are the stumbling blocks for any government, my
\nsuggestion is to just read our history and learn from it. This
\nwill be reflected in the future by the voice of the electorate in
\nthe coming election.<\/p>\n
