Jakarta (ANTARA) – A laptop that initially feels fast can gradually
become sluggish after being used for some time. Applications take longer
to open, browsers begin to stutter, and even switching between windows
may no longer feel responsive.

This does not necessarily mean the laptop is broken. A number of
usage habits can reduce its performance, from running too many
applications to having almost no storage space left.

Microsoft says limited storage, too many startup applications,
outdated software and hardware that no longer meets modern performance
requirements are among the reasons Windows computers run slowly.

So, what can make a laptop slow down quickly?

Running too many applications at once

Opening many applications at the same time is convenient, but each
one requires resources such as RAM and processor capacity.

For example, having a browser with dozens of tabs open alongside a
word processor, music player, meeting application and editing software
can put a heavier burden on a laptop with limited specifications.

Close applications you are no longer using. The same applies to
browser tabs: the more active tabs there are, the more resources they
may consume.

Too many applications launching when the laptop starts

Have you ever found that it takes a long time from pressing the power
button until your laptop is ready to use?

One possible cause is having too many applications launch
automatically at startup.

Some applications enable this feature so they are ready to use as
soon as the computer starts. But if too many do so, the startup process
can become more demanding.

Microsoft advises Windows users to check their list of startup
applications and disable those that do not need to launch
automatically.

You can check this under Settings > Apps > Startup or by using
Task Manager.

Allowing storage to become almost full

Nearly exhausted storage capacity can also affect a laptop’s
performance.

Photos, videos, documents, applications, downloads and accumulated
temporary data can all leave less free space.

Microsoft says low disk space can reduce PC performance. It is
therefore worth checking your storage regularly and deleting files you
no longer need.

Mac users can use the Storage menu in system settings to see which
file categories are taking up the most space.

Do not let your laptop drive remain almost full all the time.

Keeping too many applications you never use

Without realising it, a laptop can fill up with applications that
were used once and then left installed.

Over time, the number of installed applications can grow. Some may
also run processes in the background.

If you no longer use them, uninstall them. This can free up storage
and reduce unnecessary activity.

However, do not delete system programmes or applications you do not
recognise indiscriminately. Check what an application does before
uninstalling it.

Rarely updating the system and applications

Putting off system updates for months may seem harmless, particularly
if the laptop still works as usual.

But updates are not only about new features. They can also bring bug
fixes, security improvements and performance enhancements.

Microsoft lists updating Windows and drivers among the steps users
can take when a computer has performance problems.

So, when a laptop starts behaving strangely or slowing down, check
whether its operating system and drivers are still receiving
updates.

Too many processes running in the background

Some applications continue working even after their windows have been
closed. These might include file-syncing applications, update software,
cloud services or other programmes designed to run in the
background.

If there are too many, they can increase the use of CPU, RAM or
storage.

On Windows, you can open Task Manager to see which applications and
processes are using the most resources.

This can help you identify whether a particular application is
quietly putting a burden on the laptop.

Letting the laptop overheat

A laptop that gets too hot can also suffer a drop in performance.

When component temperatures rise, the system may reduce performance
to help control the heat. As a result, a laptop that normally runs
smoothly can feel slower, particularly during demanding tasks such as
gaming, video editing or running many applications at once.

Using a laptop on a bed, cushion or other surface that blocks its
ventilation openings can make airflow worse.

It is better to use the laptop on a hard, flat surface so that its
vents are not obstructed.

If the laptop frequently overheats or its fan keeps running loudly
even when it is not being used for demanding tasks, the issue should
also be investigated.

The laptop’s specifications are no longer sufficient

Not every slow laptop can be fixed simply by deleting files or
closing applications.

An older laptop may be struggling to run software and operating
systems that increasingly require more resources.

Microsoft also cautions that computers with outdated hardware may not
see a significant performance improvement from simple optimisation
alone.

If the problem persists, upgrading components where possible, such as
RAM or storage, may be an option. However, some laptops have components
that cannot easily be replaced or upgraded.

Check the laptop’s specifications and upgrade options before buying
new components.

Do not rush to blame the laptop

A sluggish laptop does not always mean it needs to be replaced
straight away. First, check your usage habits, the number of
applications running, the state of your storage, the device’s
temperature and whether its system is up to date.

Start with simple steps such as closing unused applications, clearing
out files you no longer need, reducing the number of startup
applications and restarting the laptop regularly.

If it remains slow after these steps, consider whether the problem
lies with the hardware or specifications that are no longer
adequate.

With proper care and use, a laptop’s performance can be maintained
and the device need not be added to the list of items to replace in a
hurry.
",
