Yasin Aktay argues that Max Weber departed from his interpretive sociological method when analysing Islam, relying instead on inherited Western assumptions. This contrasted with Weber’s approach to Protestantism, which took believers’ own religious meanings seriously when explaining their economic behaviour.

The answer to this question is explored by Yasin Aktay, a Turkish
academic, politician and author, in an article cited from Al Jazeera on
Thursday (15 October 2026).

The author argues that Max Weber approached Islam through inherited
prejudices, unlike his treatment of other religions.

Bryan S Turner’s book Max Weber and Islam: A Critical Study,
which I translated into Turkish years ago, reveals one of the most
striking paradoxes in Weber’s sociology.

Max Weber was one of the pioneers of “interpretive sociology”
(verstehende Soziologie), a method that brought major changes
to modern sociology.

He believed that, to understand social action, one must start with
the meaning that actors themselves attach to their behaviour.

Yet, when discussing Islam, Weber set this method aside to some
extent. He did not begin by considering how Muslims understood their own
world, but instead relied on a framework of thought about Islam that had
been shaped in the West over centuries.

The distinctive feature of Weber’s method was its rejection of
explanations that reduce social reality to a set of external factors.
Instead, he argued that one must first enter the world of social actors
in order to understand their actions.

For example, when studying the economic behaviour of Protestant
Christians, Weber paid close attention to their beliefs about
predestination, salvation, work and worldly success.

He did not view Protestantism merely as a reflection of class
interests or economic conditions. Rather, he sought to understand how
religious beliefs shaped human behaviour.
",
