The Indonesian government plans to implement a one-day-a-week work-from-home (WFH) policy for civil servants and private sector workers starting in March 2026, aimed at enhancing efficiency and saving fuel and energy amid global dynamics. Officials suggest Wednesday as the ideal day to avoid perceptions of extended weekends, with the policy excluding sectors like services, industry, and trade that cannot accommodate remote work. Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto confirmed the policy will be finalised this month following presidential directives, highlighting its role in broader economic efficiency measures.

The question of when the one-day-a-week WFH policy will take effect
and on which day remains a public concern as the government plans to
implement a remote working scheme for civil servants (ASN) and private
sector workers. Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto
confirmed that the policy will be established in March 2026. However,
the government has not yet announced the exact implementation date or
the specific day. “It will definitely be set this month,” Airlangga said
after a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential
Palace Complex in Jakarta on Friday (27/3/2026). Home Affairs Minister
Tito Karnavian stated that the official announcement will be made after
direct instructions from the President. Meanwhile, State Secretary
Minister Prasetyo Hadi emphasised that the WFH policy does not apply to
all sectors. According to him, only certain fields that allow remote
work will implement this scheme. “For example, the services, industry,
and trade sectors will certainly not be part of this policy,” Prasetyo
said. He explained that this policy is part of efficiency efforts,
including energy and fuel oil (BBM) savings, which the government is
currently reviewing amid global dynamics. He noted that choosing a
midweek day is important to avoid the perception of a “long holiday” if
WFH is applied on Friday or Monday. “If it’s Friday, it could be
interpreted as a long holiday. If it’s Monday, it’s the same, it could
be seen as an extension of the weekend,” he said. He assessed that
Wednesday is the most ideal option because it is in the middle of the
week, thus maintaining the work rhythm. Meanwhile, Finance Minister
Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa views the implementation of one day a week WFH as
able to drive energy efficiency, particularly in saving BBM.
",
