Discussions over the date of Eid al-Fitr 2026 have intensified as Ramadan 1447 AH approaches its midpoint. Muhammadiyah has already announced 1 Shawwal 1447 AH, while the government will officially determine Eid al-Fitr 1447 AH through an isbat session on 19 March 2026, potentially aligning with Muhammadiyah’s calculation for a nationwide celebration on 20 March 2026.

Discussions on the date of Eid al-Fitr 2026 are intensifying as
Ramadan 1447 AH enters its midpoint. Muhammadiyah has already announced
the date for 1 Shawwal 1447 AH. Meanwhile, the government will set Eid
al-Fitr 1447 AH or Eid al-Fitr 2026 officially through an isbat session.
So, when will Eid al-Fitr 2026 or 1447 AH be declared? The
Director-General of Guidance for the Islamic Community of the Ministry
of Religious Affairs (Kemenag), Abu Rokhmad, said the isbat session for
Eid al-Fitr 2026 will begin at 4:00 pm Western Indonesian Time (WIB) in
the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Jakarta.
“The isbat session for 1 Shawwal 1447 AH will take place on 19 March
2026, coinciding with 29 Ramadan 1447 AH,” Abu said in a statement on
Monday (2 March 2026). He added that the isbat session will be based on
verified calculation (hisab) and moon sighting (rukyat) data, and will
involve a range of stakeholders, such as astronomy experts from BMKG,
BRIN, planetariums, observatories, and representatives from Islamic
community organisations. “Because it involves broad representation, the
isbat decision has strong religious legitimacy,” he said. The Ministry
of Religious Affairs has also prepared coordination for monitoring
rukyatul hilal at various points across Indonesia to ensure the process
proceeds in an orderly and informative manner for the public. The
decision is set out in Muhammadiyah Central Leadership’s Maklumat
No. 2/MLM/I.0/E/2025 concerning the Determination of the Results of
Ramadan, Shawwal, and Zulhijah 1447 AH. The circular explains that 1
Shawwal 1447 H corresponds to Friday Legi, 20 March 2026 CE. This
determination is based on the method of hisab hakiki wujudul hilal,
which has long served as Muhammadiyah’s official guide in determining
the start of the Hijri month. This year, Muhammadiyah has also
implemented the Global Unified Hijri Calendar (KHGT), a dating system
that adopts the principle of one day, one date worldwide so that the
Islamic calendar can be arranged systematically and predictably. For
Muhammadiyah adherents, certainty about the date is important for
preparing Eid prayers, family activities, and homecoming plans. However,
for the government’s official decision, the public will still need to
await the results of the isbat session on 19 March 2026. If the
government’s rukyat and hisab results align with Muhammadiyah’s
calculations, there is a possibility Eid al-Fitr 1447 AH will be
celebrated simultaneously on 20 March 2026.
",
