"summary": "An Indonesian legislator and doctoral candidate reflects on a global democratic paradox where expanded freedoms have not fostered truth-seeking but rather polarisation and anger. He argues that Indonesia's greatest test is not a lack of liberty, but the erosion of civility and mutual respect in its public discourse.",
"content": "<p>There is a great irony growing in many democracies in the 21st\ncentury. The wider the freedom of speech humans possess, the harder it\nbecomes to find conversations that genuinely seek the truth. The more\nopen the democratic space, the easier it is for anger to disguise itself\nas courage. The more people claim to fight for the people, the fewer are\ntruly willing to listen to one another. This phenomenon does not only\noccur in Indonesia. It happens in the United States, torn apart by\npolitical polarisation. It happens in Europe, facing a wave of populism\nand a crisis of trust in institutions. It happens in various countries\nthat find that freedom does not automatically give birth to wisdom.\nDemocracy indeed gives people the right to speak. But democracy never\nguarantees that people will use that right well. This is where the\ngreatest test of a nation truly begins. Not when the people lack\nfreedom. But when the people possess such vast freedom, yet slowly lose\ntheir decorum in using it. In recent years, Indonesia\u2019s public sphere\nhas shown symptoms worthy of collective reflection. Criticism of the\ngovernment continues to flow. Demonstrations take place. The media\nperforms its oversight function. Academics, activists, students, and\ncivil society express diverse views. All of this is an important part of\ndemocratic life.<\/p>",
