What's behind the strike?<\/p>\n
Minibus drivers in Jakarta greeted the long delayed new
\ntraffic ruling which, among other things, increases ticketing up
\nto four fold, with a strike this week.<\/p>\n
Unlike state-owned bus firms, private minibus companies employ
\ntheir drivers based on daily dues. They have no regular wages and
\nthis fact alone mirrors the subordinate position of the drivers
\nin the working relationship.<\/p>\n
The strike is their last move for survival when all avenues
\nhave been treaded, including traffic ruling violations in their
\noperations.<\/p>\n
The strike signals an \"overlapping\" point. The question is how
\ncould the hitherto unrighteous drivers demand to knock off the
\nnew ruling which is something right and ask for justification for
\nlower penalties which is wrong as it is against the law?<\/p>\n
This is not a really black and white situation as their demand
\nfor justification is based on the need for them to be able to
\nlive with earnings that are just enough to survive.<\/p>\n
When the upholding of justice is still a problem, violation
\ndoes not seem an aberration and this is the unlikely situation we
\nare in.<\/p>\n
