What pirate attacks mean<\/p>\n
Mariners and shipping companies tired of pirate attacks dared
\nhope that the Dec. 26 tsunami had cleaned out buccaneers and
\nhideout coves along Sumatra's indented coastline. But the
\nregenerative powers of this ancient breed of brigands are
\nunhelpfully well celebrated.<\/p>\n
They were back in the past week, seizing crewmen for ransom in
\nseparate boardings of commercial vessels in the Malacca Strait.<\/p>\n
The view that the gangs could have been quiet because of the
\npresence of multinational naval contingents engaged in tsunami
\nrelief operations in Aceh will bring no cheer. The last of the
\nAmerican relief ships departed Sumatra on Wednesday, as the
\nIndonesian government had expressed a wish to have all foreign
\nmilitary involvement ended by this month. This is not a vacuum,
\nbut the new circumstances will place the littoral states'
\ncombined naval and marine police resources under great pressure.<\/p>\n
Shipping firms should also not shirk their responsibilities in
\ninvesting in shipboard security systems and satellite
\nsurveillance.
