WFP launches nutrition program<\/p>\n
The World Food Programme (WFP) has held a series of
\ntraining courses for nutrition educators and volunteers from 17
\nlocal NGO partners in conjunction with the launching of the third
\ncycle of its nutrition program.<\/p>\n
\"The training course, held from Jan. 15 to Feb. 5, is aimed at
\nenhancing knowledge of the nutrition educators and volunteers to
\nhelp improve the implementation of the program,\" WFP's country
\ndirector Bishow Parajuli said in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Over 700 participants from Greater Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang
\nand Surabaya will join the course, he said.<\/p>\n
The nutrition program is designed to address the growing
\nconcern that the economic crisis continues to have a negative
\nimpact on the nutrition and health of the poor, in particular
\nwomen and children.<\/p>\n
Lack of access to an adequate amount of nutritious food and
\ninadequate knowledge about nutrition, especially among mothers,
\nare reported to be the two most important factors contributing to
\nthe prevalence of malnutrition, according to the statement.<\/p>\n
An average of 30,000 children under the age of five and a
\nsimilar number of mothers have been assisted under the program
\nevery month in the four big cities.<\/p>\n
In addition to its nutrition program, WFP also contributes to
\nimproving the nutritional status of the poor through its other
\nactivities, including the distribution of cheap rice and the
\nprovision of humanitarian assistance to internally displaced
\npersons and refugees.<\/p>\n
Through its activities, WFP has provided food aid at a cost of
\nUS$50 million annually benefiting 2.8 million urban poor in the
\nfour big cities and displaced persons in Madura, North and
\nCentral Maluku and Central Sulawesi. -- JP<\/p>",
