Western Armada sets up amphibious unit<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Navy's Western Armada inaugurated a new unit
\nfor amphibious operations in anticipation of new ships arriving
\nfrom Germany to strengthen naval defense in Indonesia's western
\nwaters.<\/p>\n
\"In dealing with actual threats, these amphibious ships will
\nplay a strategic role in supporting naval operations in this
\narea,\" Western Armada Chief Commodore Arief Kushariadi said
\nyesterday as he inaugurated the unit at the Armada's
\nheadquarters.<\/p>\n
The Amphibious Fleets Unit was founded as Indonesia began
\nreceiving the first delivery of 39 warships it had ordered from
\nthe former arsenals of East Germany.<\/p>\n
Commodore Arief also launched the training command unit
\nyesterday as part of the armada's efforts to build an integrated
\narmada system.<\/p>\n
Arief (left in photo) inducted the chiefs of the two new
\nunits, Col. Sumardjo (right) for the amphibious unit and Col.
\nFachmi Djamaris (center) for the training command.<\/p>\n
Arief said the armada will soon be receiving more ships from
\nGermany, allowing it to further build new escorts units and
\nminesweepers.<\/p>\n
So far, 17 of the 39 warships ordered from Germany have
\narrived in Indonesia. They consist of nine minesweepers, five
