Lubuk Basung (ANTARA) - The West Sumatra Natural Resources
Conservation Agency (BKSDA) evacuated a sun bear caught in a rope snare
intended for wild boars near a resident’s plantation in Botan, Nagari
Panti Timur, Panti District, Pasaman Regency, on Friday. Head of the
Pasaman Region I Conservation Resort, Edi Susilo, stated in Lubuk Basung
that the evacuation involved BKSDA officers, the Centre for Orangutan
Protection (COP), and a veterinarian from the Pasaman Agriculture
Office. “The bear was sedated before the evacuation was carried out,” he
said. Observations revealed the bear was an adult female with snare
wounds on its leg. The joint team then carried the sun bear on a
stretcher to the conservation post at the Rimbo Panti Nature Tourism
Park (TWA). “Upon arrival at TWA Rimbo Panti, the bear received
treatment from the veterinarian,” he added. This incident follows the
recent case of a female Sumatran tiger cub caught in a ‘rattus Pasaman’
type wire snare in a resident’s garden in Jorong Lima Sempadang, Nagari
Padang Matinggi Utara, Rao Utara District, Pasaman, on Thursday (21/5).
The tiger, aged under one year, sustained injuries to its neck and leg.
In response, BKSDA West Sumatra issued Circular Letter Number 1 of 2026
prohibiting the use of Rattus Pasaman snares, dangerous sling traps, or
steel wire for controlling wild boar pests. The circular aims to protect
biodiversity and prevent the death of protected wildlife, particularly
Sumatran tigers, sun bears, and other animals, due to hazardous snares.
“We will intensively disseminate this circular to the community through
nagari or village governments to prevent protected wildlife from being
caught in snares again,” he said.
",
