The West Lombok Regional Council (DPRD) has rebuked the West Nusa\nTenggara (NTB) provincial government, which it deems slow in repairing\nseverely damaged schools. As a result, hundreds of pupils at several\nstate senior high schools have been forced to study at emergency\nlocations because their classrooms are on the verge of collapse.<\/p>\n
Saeun, a member of Commission IV of the West Lombok DPRD, highlighted\nthe sluggish handling of damaged schools, such as SMAN 1 Gunungsari,\nwhere six classrooms have been sealed off due to the risk of collapse,\nand SMAN 1 Lingsar, which previously suffered severe damage.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have met with the school authorities several times, and the\nsituation is truly concerning. Those sealed classrooms have long been in\nneed of attention,\u201d he said on Thursday (30\/7\/2026).<\/p>\n
According to Saeun, there has yet to be any concrete action from the\nNTB provincial government. Meanwhile, the damage has forced pupils to\nstudy in the canteen, the lobby and other emergency spaces.<\/p>\n
\u201cYet to this day the provincial government has taken no action. It is\npitiful \u2014 pupils have to study in the canteen and even the school lobby,\nwhen this is supposed to be a model school,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The PAN politician also questioned the provincial government\u2019s\nreadiness to manage senior high schools, an authority transferred from\nthe district governments. In his view, if the province cannot handle the\nproblem, management of the schools should be returned to the\ndistricts.<\/p>\n
\u201cSenior high schools were originally under the district\u2019s authority;\nthe province took them over several years ago. The province has received\nseveral hectares of land and the schools, yet it cannot manage to build\nanything. If it is incapable, just hand them back to the district,\u201d he\nasserted.<\/p>\n
Saeun said he frequently receives complaints from residents who are\ndismayed to see their children studying in storerooms and school\nlobbies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has been going on for a very long time. People are angry\nbecause they see their children studying in discomfort. Residents do not\nknow whether the province or the district holds the authority, so they\nsimply report it to us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He urged the NTB provincial government to repair the damaged schools\nimmediately rather than waiting for casualties.<\/p>\n
\u201cGet it sorted now; do not wait for public outcry before acting. Let\nus not wait until lives are lost,\u201d he pleaded.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of Pupils Studying in Canteens and Storerooms<\/p>\n
Previously, hundreds of pupils at SMAN 1 Gunungsari were forced to\nstudy in the lobby, canteen, prayer room, storeroom and even\nlaboratories after six classrooms were sealed off due to their\nnear-collapse condition.<\/p>\n
The head of SMAN 1 Gunungsari, Musyrifin, said the sealing was\ncarried out on the recommendation of the NTB Provincial Public Works and\nHousing Office (Dinas PUPR), after an inspection concluded that the\nclassrooms had to be vacated for safety reasons.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on the inspection by the provincial PUPR office, we were\nadvised to clear the classrooms. But we were already short of four\nclassrooms to begin with. If you count it, around 360 pupils are\naffected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to Musyrifin, the building uses a concrete roof supported\nby wooden beams, which was deemed risky. He hopes the government will\ncarry out repairs promptly so that teaching and learning activities can\nreturn to normal.<\/p>\n
