The Human Development Index (HDI) for West Java reached 75.90 points\nin 2025, recording the highest growth in five years at 1.31 per cent. On\naverage, West Java\u2019s HDI grew by approximately 0.99 per cent per year\nduring the 2021-2025 period.<\/p>\n
Head of BPS West Java, Margaretha Ari Anggorowati, stated that the\nHDI growth was supported by improvements in all its constituent\ncomponents. These include Life Expectancy (UHH), Mean Years of Schooling\n(RLS), Expected Years of Schooling, and real per capita expenditure.<\/p>\n
In 2025, West Java\u2019s UHH reached 75.53 years, meaning a baby born in\n2025 is expected to live to that age. This figure increased by 0.37\nyears compared to 2024, representing a 0.49 per cent growth. Over the\npast five years (2021-2025), UHH has grown at an average rate of 0.39\nper cent per year. Health indicators forming life expectancy have\nimproved, with the percentage of households with access to adequate\ndrinking water sources rising by 0.94 percentage points and the\npercentage of households without proper sanitation facilities decreasing\nby 0.50 percentage points compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n
The next component of the HDI is the knowledge dimension, which\nmeasures educational attainment through two main indicators: Expected\nYears of Schooling (HLS) and Mean Years of Schooling (RLS). HLS in West\nJava reached 13.02 years, indicating that a child aged 7 in 2025 is\nexpected to pursue education for 13.02 years, equivalent to the first\nyear of tertiary education. HLS increased by 0.22 years or 1.72 per cent\ncompared to the previous year, marking the highest growth rate during\nthe 2021-2025 period, where the average annual growth was 0.80 per\ncent.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, RLS in West Java has shown a consistently increasing\ntrend, reaching 9.14 years in 2025. This means the average resident aged\n25 and above has completed schooling up to approximately class IX, or\nthe equivalent of finishing junior secondary school. This achievement\nexperienced a significant growth acceleration of 3.04 per cent compared\nto the previous year.<\/p>\n
Real per capita expenditure also showed a positive increasing trend\nthroughout the 2021-2025 period, with an average annual growth of 3.29\nper cent. In 2025, the value reached 12.45 million rupiah per year,\ngrowing by 2.39 per cent or an increase of approximately 290,000 rupiah\ncompared to the previous year.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, poverty indicators showed significant improvement. The\nnumber of people living in poverty decreased by 193,920, in line with a\n0.44 percentage point drop in the poverty rate. This reduction is\nexpected to boost the purchasing power of West Java\u2019s population,\nparticularly among low-income households.<\/p>\n
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi stated that the province\u2019s HDI\nincrease was the largest nationally. Based on BPS data, West Java\u2019s HDI\nin 2025 rose by 0.98 points compared to the previous year. The HDI\nincrease in other provinces, such as East Java and Central Java, rose by\n0.78 points and 0.90 points respectively.
