West Java prosecutors confiscate motorcycles<\/p>\n

West Java prosecutors probing a corruption case allegedly
\ninvolving West Java Governor R. Nuriana have confiscated hundreds
\nof motorcycles to be used as evidence, it was reported here on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
According to the prosecutors' office, the governor was
\nsuspected of stealing Rp 3.4 billion from the Governor's
\nInstruction Fund to buy hundreds of motorcycles to be used by the
\ncadres from former ruling party Golkar during campaigning in the
\nprovince in 1997.<\/p>\n
The corruption case also implicated Misbach, a former chief of
\nthe province's government program designers, who is now the
\nregent of Sumedang regency, West Java.<\/p>\n
Basuni Masyarif, the head of the prosecutors' team for the
\ncase, said on Monday that until now they had confiscated 160
\nmotorcycles from a suspected total of 685 given to party cadres
\nin several districts of the province before the general elections
\nin 1997.<\/p>\n
Reliable sources in Cirebon told The Jakarta Post on Monday
\nthat the prosecutors had confiscated about 90 motorcycles from
\ndistricts in Cirebon alone.<\/p>\n
He said that they had questioned some 75 witnesses for the
\ncase, including regents, mayors, and a number of officials from
\nthe provincial and district administrations.<\/p>\n
The case came to light when several non-governmental
\norganizations and legislators from the province reported the
\ncorruption case to the police two years ago.<\/p>\n
Basyuni said that they had had difficulties in questioning
\nNuriana as the governor was very busy and unable to attend such
\nquestioning.<\/p>\n
So far, he said, only Misbach was the main suspect and the
\nalleged perpetrator of the corruption although many have
\nsuspected senior officials in the province, including the
\ngovernor himself.<\/p>\n
