West Java names two gubernatorial candidates<\/p>\n

The West Java provincial legislative council will likely nominate
\ntwo gubernatorial candidates proposed by major factions after the
\nminority factions' candidate was rejected on Monday.<\/p>\n
The gubernatorial election committee at a plenary meeting in
\nBandung, the capital of West Java province, decided to accept the
\nnominations of Tayo Tarmadi and Danny Setiawan to contest the
\nupcoming gubernatorial election.<\/p>\n
Tayo, a retired Army major general and a legislator
\nrepresenting the Indonesian Military in the House of
\nRepresentatives, was nominated by the Indonesian Democratic Party
\nof Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) and the National Awakening Party
\n(PKB) factions. These two factions also nominated West Java PDI
\nPerjuangan chapter chairman Rudy Harsya Tanaya as their candidate
\nfor deputy governor.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile Golkar, which entered into a coalition with the
\nUnited Development Party (PPP), nominated Danny Setiawan, the
\nsecretary of the Golkar chapter in the province, as its
\ngubernatorial candidate and Nu'man Abdul Hakim as its candidate
\nfor deputy governor.<\/p>\n
The military\/police faction nominated no candidates so as to
\nostensibly maintain their neutrality while the candidates for
\ngovernor and deputy governor proposed by the combined faction
\n(Abdi) were rejected because the official letter proposing their
\ncandidacies was not signed by the faction chairman and secretary.<\/p>\n
Eka Santosa, chairman of the gubernatorial election committee,
\nsaid the provincial legislative council would now confirm the two
\ngubernatorial nominations as definitive candidates after approval
\nfrom Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"According to our schedule, the two candidates are scheduled
\nto detail their vision, mission and programs before the
\ncouncillors on April 23,\" he explained.<\/p>\n
The names of all the candidates would be submitted to the
\nMinistry of Home Affairs for approval.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, hundreds of supporters of the combined faction
\nstaged a demonstration at the provincial legislature to protest
\nthe gubernatorial election committee's rejection of their
\ncandidates.<\/p>\n
The demonstrators dispersed peacefully after dozens of
\nsecurity personnel arrived at the scene.<\/p>\n
Last week, the Sundanese People's Forum (Formmas) built a
\nstage in front of the council building, promising to protest over
\nthe election process.<\/p>\n
According to them, the gubernatorial election should be
\nstopped or delayed, as only rich candidates could participate in
\nit. That, they said, would almost certainly lead to bribery among
\nthe council members.<\/p>\n
The gubernatorial race is West Java's first under the regional
\nautonomy law, which was implemented in 2001.<\/p>\n
Under the law, regions could elect their own governors,
\nregents and mayors as part of granting them greater authority to
\nmanage their own affairs.<\/p>\n
Previously, the central government always appointed a governor
\nwith a military background for West Java, considering the
\nprovince as a backbone to security in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Many councillors now said they would like to see a civilian
\ngovernor take the post.<\/p>",
