West Java gubernatorial election result accepted<\/p>\n

Following a marathon three-day plenary meeting, the West Java
\nprovincial legislative council finally accepted the victory of
\nDanny Setiawan and his running mate Nu'man Abdul Hakim in the
\nrecent gubernatorial election.<\/p>\n
A majority of councillors attending the session agreed to
\ncertify the gubernatorial election's result after all parties
\npresented their political stance on the election.<\/p>\n
Antara news agency reported on Thursday that the plenary
\nsession which was scheduled for May 27, lasted until Thursday
\nafter the Indonesian Democratic Party for Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan) whose candidate was defeated, asked for an
\ninvestigation into alleged vote buying during the election.<\/p>\n
The party said the plenary session should also listen to the
\nprotest of the election by nine organizations and to respond to
\nthe eleven councillors who abstained during the election.<\/p>\n
The Golkar Party, the United Development Party (PPP),
\nmilitary\/police and coalition factions believed that there was
\nnot any bribery in the election and that therefore the election
\nresults were valid.<\/p>\n
In the gubernatorial election held May 22, Setiawan and his
\nrunning mate, nominated by Golkar and PPP factions, won 49 votes
\nwhile Tayo Tarmadi and his running mate, nominated by PDI
\nPerjuangan and the National Awakening party collected only 39
\nvotes. Of the 100 members of the provincial legislature, eleven
\nabstained and one walked out.<\/p>\n
Tayo and his running mate lost after the PDI Perjuangan and
\nPKB factions failed to win the support of the eleven member
\nmilitary\/police faction.<\/p>\n
Provincial legislature chairman Eka Santosa, who presided over
\nthe plenary session, said that the gubernatorial election results
\nwould be delivered to the President through Home Minister Hari
\nSabarno for approval.<\/p>\n
\"The President is expected to approve it and the minister is
\nexpected to set the date for the inauguration of the new governor
\nand deputy governor,\" he said. He expected the new governor to be
\nsworn in before June 8, the day outgoing governor R. Nuriana's
\ntenure would end.<\/p>\n
Setiawan and Nu'man will serve their terms of office June 2003
\nto June 2008.<\/p>\n
The regional autonomy law allows the President to delay the
\nelect-governor's inauguration if he and his running mate
\nallegedly bribed any councillors or committed other crimes in the
\npast.<\/p>\n
President Megawati Soekarnoputri has suspended the installment
\nof Alzier Tabrani as Lampung governor because he was allegedly
\ninvolved in several corruption cases during his tenure as
\nsecretary to the provincial administration. He is being
\ninvestigated by police in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The North Sumatra legislature has yet to endorse the result of
\nthe recent gubernatorial election because a group of students
\nhave questioned the authenticity of elect-deputy governor Rudolf
\nPardede's high school diploma.<\/p>\n
The students have accused Rudolf of using a fake diploma to
\nmeet the eligibility requirements for the election. He was
\nincumbent governor T. Rizal Nurdin's running mate during the
\nelection.<\/p>",
