West Java dominates fencing c'ships<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The West Java contingent proved its dominance at
\nthe national fencing championships which ended on Saturday,
\nwinning the junior and senior division titles.<\/p>\n
West Java was awarded the Minister of National Education Cup
\nafter collecting 315 points in the junior division, while its 410
\npoints in the senior division earned the team the National Sports
\nCouncil (KONI) Cup.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, North Sulawesi won the overall title in the cadet
\ndivision with 140 points, winning the Widarsa Cup.<\/p>\n
In the final medal tally, West Java collected six gold, five
\nsilver and nine bronze. North Sulawesi grabbed four gold, four
\nsilver and five bronze.<\/p>\n
The championships started last Sunday and consisted of 17
\nevents.<\/p>\n
West Java also showed its power by having the most athletes of
\nany team selected for the Kuala Lumpur 2001 Southeast Asian (SEA)
\nGames national team preparations. From 20 nominees in five
\nfencing events, West Java placed eight fencers.<\/p>\n
\"Our secret is simply the unity of fencers, coaches and
\nofficials to achieve the best at these championships,\" West Java
\nteam manager Hadi Sartono told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, West Java coach Sucipto said the excellent result
\nwas the fruit of systematic development and training implemented
\nby West Java officials.<\/p>\n
Indonesian Fencing Association (Ikasi) chairman
\nWidarsadipradja told the Post that fencing had been developed
\nmore effectively outside Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"There are to many diversions here, so young people are not
\ninterested in learning fencing. It's different in other regions
\nwhere the fencers can have better concentration,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"It's just too bad that some provinces like Aceh and Maluku
\nare in turmoil, because they have good fencers.\" (nvn)<\/p>",
