West family saved from robbery<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police foiled a robbery attempt and shot dead a
\nburglar who, along with four accomplices, attempted to rob a
\nhouse in West Jakarta early yesterday morning.<\/p>\n
Lt. Col. Latief Rabar, spokesman for the city police, told
\nreporters police fatally shot a robber and wounded another as the
\ncriminals desperately tried to assault the officers assigned to
\ncapture them.<\/p>\n
Police have yet to capture three other suspects who managed to
\nescape. \"We already know their identities. It's only a matter of
\ntime before we arrest them all,\" said Latief.<\/p>\n
The robbery attempt took place at around 3 a.m. in the house
\nof businessman Fadel Subarja on Jl. Meruya Selatan, Kembangan
\ndistrict, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Police said at the time there were three persons at home,
\nHelena, who is Subarja's wife, their daughter Elisabet, 20, a
\nuniversity student, and Karmin, their domestic helper.<\/p>\n
The five burglars, two of whom were wearing masks, leapt into
\nthe backyard of the house after climbing a wall by ladder.<\/p>\n
\"They wore police belts and jackets to give the impression
\nthat they were officers,\" said Latief.<\/p>\n
The criminals attempted breaking into the house via the left
\ndoor, which lead to Helena being awakened by the noise.<\/p>\n
Frightened, Helena telephoned her husband Subarja who told
\nher to get in touch with the police. But while she was on phone
\nto the Kebun Jeruk district police, the criminals cut the
\ntelephone line and entered the house.<\/p>\n
\"But the police already had the address and the message,\"
\nLatief explained.<\/p>\n
Under threat of sharp weapons, the robbers herded Helena,
\nElisabet and Karmin to the bathroom where they tied and gagged
\nthem.<\/p>\n
In the meantime a four member police team, including two
\ndetectives, together with a night watchman and Subarja arrived at
\nthe house.<\/p>\n
When the officers stormed the house three of the criminals
\nmanaged to escape, leaving their two accomplices behind, one
\nhiding behind a cupboard, another under a bed.<\/p>\n

While the officers searched the premises, the robber hiding
\nunder the bed, later identified as Hasmi, 29, suddenly moved out
\nof his hiding place and assaulted an officer. But the alert
\nofficer managed to advert danger and shot Hasmi in the leg.<\/p>\n
The criminal hiding behind the cupboard, identified as Herman,
\n34, also made a desperate attack on an officer by lunging at him
\nwith a sickle in his hand. The officer had no choice but to
\nshoot, wounding him in the chest, Latief said. The robber died
\ninstantly.<\/p>\n
The police confiscated some material evidence, including a
\nwristwatch which is believed to belong to one of the robbers,
\nsome machetes, several nails and a set of tools believed to have
\nbeen used in breaking the door open. (jsk)<\/p>",
