Well-known aspirants yet to declare their wealth<\/p>\n

A number of public figures who top the lists of legislative
\ncandidates representing their respective parties are among those
\nwho have not yet submitted all the required documents, including
\nwealth declarations, to qualify for this April's election.<\/p>\n
General Elections Commission member Anas Urbaningrum revealed
\non Thursday the among the well-known figures who had failed to
\nsubmit all the necessary documents were President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri's husband, Taufik Kiemas, who plans to stand in
\nWest Java.<\/p>\n
Anas, who is in charge of the verification of legislative
\ncandidates, said Taufiq had not yet submitted his Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) membership card.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Taufiq's brother, Santayana Kiemas, who is also
\nrepresenting the PDI-P, had failed to present his party
\nmembership card and his wealth declaration.<\/p>\n
Unlike in previous elections, all legislative candidates for
\nthe upcoming polls have to declare their assets as part of the
\ncountry's faltering drive against corruption.<\/p>\n
As of Wednesday, only 1,812 out of the 8,871 candidates had
\npassed the administrative screening required before they will be
\nallowed to contest the legislative elections, scheduled for April
\n5.<\/p>\n
Vice President Hamzah Haz's son, Nur Agus Haz, of the United
\nDevelopment Party (PPP), had also still to submit his wealth
\ndeclaration and sign a statement saying he would run for the
\nlegislative election, Anas said.<\/p>\n
Agus tops the PPP's list of candidates in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
In the spirit of keeping it in the family, the son of Reform
\nStar Party chairman Zainuddin MZ, Fikri Haikal, was another of
\nthe candidates who has failed to declare his wealth to the KPU.
\nHe also failed to submit a medical certificate and certificate of
\ngood conduct from the court.<\/p>\n
Social Democratic Labor Party (PBSD) leader Muchtar Pakpahan
\nhas yet to submit his wealth declaration and residential status
\ncertificate from the district chief in the place where he
\nresides.<\/p>\n
Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) chairman Hidayat Nur Wahid, PBR
\nchairman Zaenuddin MZ, National Awakening Party (PKB) chairman
\nAlwi Shihab and United Democratic Nationhood Party (PPDK)
\nchairman Ryaas Rasyid were also listed as well-known candidates
\nwho had not presented wealth declarations.<\/p>\n
Alwi had also failed to submit his photograph and a
\ndeclaration stating his intention of standing in the legislative
\nelection.<\/p>\n
The KPU announced on Tuesday that no PKB candidate had passed
\nthe administrative verification process.<\/p>\n
Former attorney general, Andi M. Ghalib, who has joined the
\nPPP, has also failed to pass the preliminary verification process
\ndue to his failure to submit a wealth declaration, as has
\npolitical observer Andi Mallarangeng, who will represent the
\nPPDK.<\/p>\n
A party membership card was the only document missing from the
\nfile of noted economist Didiek Rachbini, who will represent the
\nNational Mandate Party (PAN).<\/p>\n
The KPU has given the candidates until Jan. 19 to furnish the
\nmissing documents or otherwise they will be disqualified from
\nstanding.
\nThe commission will announce all the eligible candidates on Jan.
\n28 and Jan. 29.<\/p>\n
The KPU also announced that no parties had fulfilled the 30
\npercent quota for women candidates in a total of 69 electoral
\ndistricts.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Concern for the Nation Functional Party (PKPB)
\nhad fulfilled the minimum 30 percent quota in 50 electoral
\ndistricts, the New Indonesian Alliance Party (Partai PIB) in 46,
\nPAN in 40, PBR in 30, the Prosperous Peace Party in 26, Golkar in
\n25, the Regional United Party (PPD) in 16, PKB in 13, and the
\nPDI-P in 11.<\/p>",
